plow stuff

hi. my first time posting. I could not find a specific spot for plow discussions so thought i would start in attachments. if i am in the right church but the wrong pew please inform as to which pew i should be in. I am looking for skimmers for a massey harris #26 plow. i have everything but the arms and skimmer blades. some real good pictures of these parts would do if no parts are available. I am handy at making stuff if i had good detailed picts. to go by. trying to put together a competition plow. thanks.

Welcome to TBN and the forum tire buster. You have posted in a good spot. I think part of your "no response" is that the Massey Harris #26 is pretty much an antique or somewhat unique or just plain old. A lot of folks, myself included, are not really that familiar with this implement.

I looked for a picture on the web - I think I saw what was a #26 - but not real sure.

Just hang tight here - there will surely be someone come along who is familiar with your plow.

I' not sure what you are calling a skimmer.
What kind of competition are you looking at antique or speed?

Lou - I think the part "skimmer" that tire buster is talking about might be those parts that shave the stuck on clay/dirt off the disks. Otherwise - I'm at a loss.

The two pictures of a #26 that I was able to scrape up off the internet were of a disk harrow type operation with some type of trailing attached moldboard plow - ???.

skimmer is part of a mould board plow. it attaches to the cutting coulter and turns about 2 inches of the sod over before the mould board turns the rest of the furrow. this ensures complete burial of all the green material. it is an option and can still be purchased on newer european plows. if you go to ransoms plow site you may see what i mean. thanks alan

Interesting, I've never seen one on plows in this country.
Just went looked at some European plows that had them.

I have never seen one, but from your description it reminded me of how Dad handled that problem after the old horse died and he bought a new farmall cub. I remember he (somehow) mounted a long piece of steel, maybe sucker rod to the plow, and formed it in such a way to lay the grass down to the bottom of the furrow as the mold board rolled the dirt on top of it. Seems like it would lay over 3 or maybe 4' tall johnson grass and not leave any showing. After getting this, first tractor for him, he rented 60 acres of land and put me to flat braking, then discing. I think this was maybe the late 1940's and I might have been around 10 years old.
