790 John deere. Grinding and clanging after going in gear

can you be more specific.

you clutch, put in gear, let out clutch and you hear banging?

what else... does it move like normal or no?

is the banging from? where? the trnny or gear case? or?

is it 4wd, and is 4wd engaged?

does it not bang if not moving?

Sounds like a clutch about gone or in need of a serious adjustment. Take up some of the thread on the clutch pedal if its grinding while going in and see if it stops. If its grinding while in gear, could be an e clip that has let go and your synchronizers are banging into each other in your tranny. If it's the latter, you need to stop using the tractor before additional damage is done.

Welcome to TBN..

A friend of mine had a similar problem with his 790. On his, the differential lock stuck and he chewed some teeth off the right side gears. It would bang and grind as he tried to move it. I helped him replace the gears and freed up the diff lock. Not sure if your problem is the same or clutch related.

Could be this also George but motion should be compromised if it's differential gears. I did this with my 750 as well shearing off the differential bolts. Lost all motion in rear wheel drive. Unless the op gets back to us as SG had requested with more details, all of us are just guessing trying to help the op.

My friends 790 chewed some teeth of the right final drive gear (part#11). He still had motion but with lots of noise and that wheel would skip when it got to the missing teeth spot.

I thought the 790 was a collar shift tranny - no synchromesh gears. Stop before you shift and then you can better listen to the grinding when you shift!
