We will be picking up a puppy this Saturday and I am kind of stumped on Dog names. This will be a family hunting dog and is a male...... Our last dog was a German Short-hair named Ruger. I kind of like the gun names, but I also hear other peoples dog names and think those are cool...

So Far I have Toby and Sig........

Any help would be appreciated!

On Edit: He is a weimaraner

Beautiful boy. Here is some online help for you.

My ant had a black dog, quite a character and called him Nox, but I knew weimarian overseas and he was called Lord - since he looked and behaved like british aristocracy:). Our family dachshund name was Rikki, my current airedale is named Montmorency, because of this book.

Thanks for the link! I looked at the top 10 list and I found Duke. My grandfather used to have a dog named Duke when I was growing up.... Going to have to add that one to the list....

I prefer single syllable names for dogs and horses. They seem to respond better to calls, especially if there is more than one in the pack (I currently have 4).

Always wanted to call a dog "Stay", "Sit", "Fetch". "Ball", "Bird", or "Kill".:D

I think you are right. Montmorency is the name, but we typically use the abbreviation Monty. Also, our dogs are bilingual, I call and talk to them in Czech, something about emotions and a foreign language.

nmu98 - if you call him Duke, he will have huge shoes to fill:D

The books by the Monks of Skee are very good. The books are about training dogs and puppy development. Well and people training. The research mentioned in at least one of the books says to get a puppy at 7/8 weeks. Getting a puppy earlier and the puppy never figures out its a dog. lol Can't remember why you don't want the puppy after 7/8 weeks but I think it was due to strong bonding to the two legged creatures.:)

Anywho, they said that dogs respond best to two syllable names ending in a vowel. I named my GSD Kelly. Lots of Germans named Kelly right? :D:D:D:D

She aways came when called. :D Was that because I picked out a great name that dogs respond too or because Kelly was just he best dog ever? :D:D I will never know but she was the best dog. She crossed Rainbow Bridge October of 2008. Best Dog Ever.

Later,
Dan

'Zeus' was my best dog. He lived up to the name -- believed he was a god too!

I think Colt is a good contender or Thompson, Mossburg and Mouser are so so

I think you could rule out AR-15 but it would get alot of attension

Over the years we have bred 26 litters of Boxes. They all have had serious registered names but simple call names. We have found that two syllable names seem to be the most effected in affecting control. Many professional trainers also recommend two syllable names.

In my opinion...dogs should name themselves...then they fit their names...

Steven Wright on dogs...
The other day, I was walking my dog around my building on the ledge. Some people are afraid of heights. Not me, I'm afraid of widths.I had a dog once. I spilled spot remover on him, and now he's gone.I put contact lenses in my dog's eyes. They had little pictures of cats on them. Then I took one out and he ran around in circles.I bought a dog the other day I named him Stay. It's fun to call him come here, Stay! Come here, Stay! He went insane. Now he just ignores me and keeps typing. He's an East German Shepherd

How about "FIRE" :D:D

Seriously, I find a dog has to live with us a day or two so we can get a feel for its name. Then something pops up and you'll be "wow, that fits perfect".

However, your list seems to be coming pretty good. I work with pets and here are some that people seem to like along with a few I brewed up.

Wally
Winslow
Max
Charlie
Ranger (cool for a hunting dog)
Brewster
Chopper
Fred
Sparky
Speedy
Snoopy
Sarge
Zippy
Brutus

GUNNER!

My wife uses golf names to get me more involved in her passion for Breading Terriers. We have had:

Trapper
Divit
Caddie
Muligan
Bogie

So far I am still on the fence!

We sold a pup and they called him GUNNER.

:D Pretty boy - what about Gigolo? The bulldozer of ladies hearts?

But I would wait a day or two, he may look like Dorian and you name him and he turns out to be a Buster or Digger or Marine or Tiller:)

Well, since I don't know where you are located I'll go ahead and suggest a name.

If you plan to keep the collar, name should be RED NECK :D
or not.:)
