Planting grass seed

Maybe this will work for those without ebay access. It's in interesting piece of equipment, I would be curious to know how well it actually works.

It seems to me that the Yardmaker would work well for lawn start-up. As an aerator, it's better than nothing but you would be compacting soil more so than a good core aerator. As an over-seeder, it would seem to be of marginal help in getting seed-to-soil contact. I could be wrong. /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

I've looked at them and they are well-built.

Just my take, here....I've always used a large tine de-thatcher to shallowly incorporate seed after broadcast for both new areas and overseeding. A drag harrow/chain harrow after broadcasting works for primary seeding, too.

Isn't most primary seeders nothing more than a double cultipacker with a seed box inbetween?

Ken, can you add a seedbox to that cultipacker?

I have done projects like that on two occassions. But only smaller. I probably did 1/2 acres. However my best luck was to work the soil up good and then broadcast seed with my Herdseeder. When done I would drag the seed in once or twice over. This gets the seed in the ground about a 1/2 inch or so. Then about a week after I would then broadcast a good fetilizer over it that had a lot of nitrogen in it. This method actually worked better than the seed that was drilled in by our landscaping guy. Everything he did I had to go back and work over and seed it myself. Do this in the fall or spring when you have cooler temperatures. Fall is best because the ground is still warm at night.
