Pipe Threader

The issue with the China threading dies is one, improper heat treat and two, the inserts aren't machined square. Peruse various estate sales and auctions and buy a Rigid or Williams, you won't be sorry. Did my entire shop in 1.5" black iron and of course used quality pipe dope.

I have the HF ratcheting die stocks as well and all the inserts needed to be removed and ground square to actually cut threads. Did that on my surface grinder. Finally, not just any oil will suffice. You need to use a sulfur based cutting oil which is an EP additive. I tend to use Tap Magic buy 'stinky' oil at any plumbing outlet.

Motor oil will only cause bad threads and galling.

I would have preferred NPT Dryseal thread dies but they are rare.

Thanks.

I tried using two large (24") pipe wrenches, but that didn't work, so I put the pipe in my 6" Wilton bench vice and cranked down hard ... I know that's not ideal, but it worked.

haha! Yeah, been there, done that. I have two pipe vises now, one bench mounted and the other a tripod. But I didn't always have them, which is why I had asked. Not easy!
