Pilated Woodpecker

/ Pilated Woodpecker #21
Woodpeckers use holes as their larder. These pics I took several years ago are of a Red Belly stuffing beetles in the cracks/crevices and holes of an old utility pole. The beetles were emerging from the ground close by. He would listen, hop a short distance to the location of the beetle emerging and making the noise, nab him and up to the top of the pole to fill the larder.

Nice Pic. We hear them and have seen them a couple of times but they are shy. Always fly off before we can get a picture. Can't mistake the holes they make.

Just by my cabin I once heard a woodpecker going at it.
Was a Pilated and man was he fast! about 5 min or less and there was I nice big square hole. Enough to fill half a bucket with his chips.
Over a week he just about decimated that tree. A cedar it was.
Oddly enough 10 years later the tree still survives but sports about 10 nice squareish holes.

Very nice picture. I have seen several in the last two weeks in my back yard here in SC.

I knew we had a pix or two of some of those birds. That suet feeder is about 15 foot from the house. Some turkeys on the driveway on March 30, 2003, they were showing off for a bunch of hens. Bambi was in the back yard below the window. The waterfall is on the edge of our property.

Nice pics everyone. We have lots of those 'peckers around here I'm glad to say. I haven't ever seen one at a suet feeder though. We get wood ducks nesting in the holes they make.

Each spring I just love watching for the young ones. They play and chase each other around in the trees.

Spring is here, the redwings arrived yesterday, and today I saw some cowbirds. There is still snow- ground is 1/2 covered- depending upon the sun, and the ground is freezing at night. We had rain night before last and 45 at night. Saw some moths flying by my tractor lights.

I really enjoy the redwings. Heard a pileated today as well calling as it flew.
