what is the preferred for posting pictures, as an attachment or actually with the thread.

I believe the preferred way is to post as an attachment or as a link to a photo. Inline posting is usually frowned upon unless it is small in filesize to avoid modem users from having to wait.

I'd say anything less than 200K would be allowed, but unless you have a good reason to post inline, I'd avoid it.
