Sort of related to this forum, but I've been intrigued by some of the recent incentives on full-sized vehicles. I have an 06' F-150 Super Crew that I absolutely love....best vehicle I've ever owned and I have had no interest in parting with it.

BUT....

Ford is now offering employee pricing plus owner loyalty AND standard rebate on all F-Series pickups. I called my closest dealer tonight to inquire about the ads I'd been seeing/hearing and this is what I learned.

-I asked about "employee" pricing and was told that it wasn't an exact percentage off the sticker but rather a number that FoMoCo reaches on its own and that would apply to all dealers and the dealer has no say over it. The example I was given was an F-150 stickering at $33k was around $26K per employee pricing.

-There is a standing $3500 rebate on all F-Series regardless of the situation.

-There is an additional $5k Owner Loyalty rebate for anyone who currently owns and wishes to trade-in a 1998 or newer Ford pickup.

I talked to the salesman and he confirmed that anyone with a Ford pickup and in my situation would be looking at roughly around $14,000 +/- off of sticker to trade.

Even though I have mine now on 0%/60 month term, and essentially paying sticker price over time, this is tugging at me. The few rough numbers I've run applying my current payoff versus the examples I have from the dealer with reasonable interest are pointing toward the trade. Sitting at the desk with the salesman could be different.

Just me thinking out loud in case any others were wondering about this too.

Don't do these kind of posts. Gets me thinking as well. I was thinking about a 2009 p/u but if they have employee price and rebates, it looks very good.

Bought my '05 Expedition on the employee discount plan. Eddie Bauer with tow package (gears and coolers), heated AND COOLED seats, power third row (don't know how nice this is until you have it) an a few other touches.

$45,000 truck that I stole for $32,000 at the time.

If I didn't like it so much and if it wasn't so darn perfect for everything I do, I'd consider a trade. Paid off, too, which kills the efficiency of a trade in/up. Plus, with the Excursion gone (diesel), there aren't many places for me to go. Only 53,000 happy miles. Seats are just getting broken in.

My next move will probably be a 2500 Suburban.

Good time to buy a truck, though. That's for sure.

I bought a new 07 Dodge Ram 1500 regular cab, short box 4x4 last year, 29.5% off sticker with rebates and discounts. While mileage isn't great, it averages about 17-17.5 mpg in 60/40 highway/city driving.

There is no doubt that there are currently some great deals out there. If you're in the market for a new full size car or pickup, now might be a good time. But there's just one fly in the ointment. Their prices are down on what they're selling, which also means that the value of any trade-in is also down. So you might be shocked to learn how little they can allow you for your existing vehicle. Naturally you might be able to sell it yourself instead of trading. For one example: I don't need, or really even want, a new vehicle, but my wife thought we should consider it. NADA guides shows trade-in value of our old Windstar to be $4,400, but I learned that in reality I can only get $1,700 to $2,500 trade-in. Yep, it's old, 2001 model, and it's got a lot of miles on it, 97,000, but everything about it is in good to excellent condition. I put new tires on it 10,000 miles ago, and we just got back from a 2400 mile round trip, averaging 20.85 mpg, riding in cool comfort. So I have no intention of trading any time in the near future.

Hear are a few things to keep in mind, if paying cash its great.

but you indicated 0% for 60 month....

walking away with 10-15K off sticker means one or both things.

1) the sticker is inflated 10-15K
2) the resale of the truck when you drive off the lot, is lower by 10-15k

this means, in a year-2,3 etc if you look at tradeing up again, youll find yourself upside down, owing 28K on something no one will buy for more than 22K

Shure you can sit there and tell yourself "this is the last truck i will ever buy" but hear you are second guessing a truck only a year old.

the smart buy IMHO, is one that is already 2-3 years old, and pay cash.

i'd also like to add another piece of fact about todays "deals". they want to act like they're "giving you a truck", but let me assure you that they are chomping at the bit to rip you off just as if the economy were booming. no not all car dealers are bad, BUT i have yet to meet one that their sole purpose was "to look out for my best interest" when buying a car. i know theyre trying to make as much money as they can off of me, they know that as well. two things about car buying. you're either going to get a LOT off the stciker price and hardly any trade-in value, OR you get a great deal on your trade-in but he won't come off the sticker price hardly any...it af all. just dont get all caught up into these "deals". thats what they want you to do. go in and find a car or truck you might be interested in, then ask for his rock bottom price, no fooling around. tell him this is his one and only shot with you. make he or she put it in writing. tell them you want to go home and think it over for a day or two and if you like the deal youll be back. theyre going to blow alot of smoke up your you know what, but dont give into it, they'll want to sell you a vehicle just as bad the next day or whenever you decide to return. theres no such thing as a "one time only deal".

I'll agree that many dealers still use the old high pressure sales tactics, but not all of them. I get my two Fords serviced at a Ford dealer. The dealer I used for a couple of years had a very busy service department and did good work, but they wre always trying to sell me something I didn't need. And since I like to know what the whole dealership is like, I visited the showroom once, as well as the used car lot, and yep, they want to play all the old high pressure games. Now of course that doesn't mean a customer has to give in, but apparently enough do that they stay in business.

But the dealer I've used now for over 2 years is entirely different. I think you, and many others, would find them hard to believe. But when you go in, they ask how they can help you, and they're smart enough to know the best salesman doesn't try to sell anything; just visits with you and answers your questions. I don't know how old the dealership is, but I do know it's over 50 years. And I received a letter from them yesterday telling all about those great deals, employee pricing, rebates, owner loyalty discounts, etc., etc. and it also said to just come in for two free tickets to a Rangers baseball game and two free tickets to a local water park. So I went in this morning, visited awhile with a friendly salesman, picked up the free tickets, and no one tried to sell me anything; didn't even ask if or when I might be in the market for another vehicle.

Yes, I know they're in business to make money, and of course if they don't make money they won't be in business long, but they've learned they can make money without trying to hookwink anyone.

Incidentally, the young couple next door bought a very clean, but used, Expedition there within the last month and said they'd never been treated so well by a car dealer.

the dealership you speak of so well is alot like my Chevrolet dealership i bought my truck from. if i had the money, and didn't keep my vehicles so long, i would buy a truck from them every 2-3 years! now, as for the other Chevy dealer in my area....well let's just say i think they go out of their way to make me mad. the two Ford dealerships are atrociously terrible, too! in my experience, i have found that tractor salesman are SO much nicer to deal with then 95% of car salesman i've dealt with. i guess that's why their are car salesman jokes and not tractor salesman jokes:p
