Picked up some chicks

/ Picked up some chicks #11
One of the RI red chicks passed away this evening, not sure why. When I changed out the water several hours ago she wasn't as active as the others, just seemed kind of sleepy. Went to check on them before turning in and there she was. Gonna call the feed store tomorrow and get another hopefully.
Sorry to hear about the loss of your chick.

Definitely keep us posted as to how it goes! I've been in the same boat thinking about getting some and was actually searching other old threads on here yesterday. I'd get them in a heartbeat if I was more prepared but am worried about finding the time to build a coop etc...
It only took me a day to build my coop and another day to 'fine tune' it. 6 birds, I slammed up a 16 square foot house for them. An almost perfect 'A' framed house with nest box, running water (in summer) [heated in winter], with 6" of styrofoam insulation in the floor. The hardest part of building it was getting the base square.

Thanks Green Power. Called the feed store today, they said it can happen and will get us another chick in a couple weeks when they get more in. Looking4new do you have a pic of your coop? Sounds nice.

I've had my chickens for about 4 months now. I have 5 and all are laying now. Eggs sure do taste great. Expect them to start laying anywhere from 18-24 weeks old. I have 3 Rhode Island Reds, and 2 Black Australorps. 4x6 coop in a 10x20 run. I let them roam the yard as much as possible, but its nice to have a secure run for them.

Happy Gilmore: where did you get them, Tractor Supply (Taunton/Halifax/Swansea) or Ventura

Nice set up a General Lee. Did you build it yourself?

The Amish built the coop. I will be building a new one myself when I'm ready. I probably will get more chickens and will need a bigger coop. I don't like the "working" design of this one. It has a large access door, but I can't reach to the other side. Nesting boxes take up valuable space and I'd like the roost bars to be higher. But it works and is good for about 8 chickens.
