Yesterday morning we picked up a half dozen chicks locally, the feathered type, lol. I've thought about getting chickens for quite some time. Well, I decided hey why not. We got 3 Rhode Island Reds and 3 Barred Rock. They'll be in the basement under the heat lamp for a while, but we're looking forward to some late summer fresh eggs.

My RI Reds have been super hardy, and I love the look of the barred rock. Good choices. We try to keep 6 going to keep us in eggs.
Enjoy!!

Years & years ago I tried raising chickens. The bottom line - try as I did - it all ended up being coyote & hawk food. With the skunks, badgers and raccoon waiting in the wings if any still remained. The chickens simply were not smart enough to go in their chicken house when danger approached.

Definitely keep us posted as to how it goes! I've been in the same boat thinking about getting some and was actually searching other old threads on here yesterday. I'd get them in a heartbeat if I was more prepared but am worried about finding the time to build a coop etc...

I was in the Denton, TX, Tractor Supply Co. store yesterday and they had a variety of chick breeds in the store, minimum purchase of 6. Then they also had baby ducks, minimum purchase of 2. And of course they had signs about ordering chicks & ducks in the quantity you need.

I was in a TSC a couple years ago about this time.
There were two employees standing looking at the 100 plus chicks in the tubs.
I ask- Are you naming them? :)
They both ignored me. ???
Well I still get a good laugh when I think about it.

I tried chicken farming once. Didn't have much luck. I don't know if i planted them too deep or too close together.

One of the RI red chicks passed away this evening, not sure why. When I changed out the water several hours ago she wasn't as active as the others, just seemed kind of sleepy. Went to check on them before turning in and there she was. Gonna call the feed store tomorrow and get another hopefully.
