Some of these avatars forum members have are great pictures. I have looked but can find no way to blow them up for easier viewing and I am not sure they have this capability. Does such a way exist?

You can probably rightclick the image and "save Picture As". Then use an image editor (Irfanview is a nice free one) to enlarge the image. However, the image will be of extremely poor quality (pixelated).
So, if you see an avatar you like, I suggest you just ask the owner to post the original picture (from which the avatar was created).

I do this all the time. As Roy suggests, save the picture on your drive (on my browser I right click on the picture and then use 'save image as') and then improve it with a graphics editor.
But there are limits to the improvements that you can make as you are doubling and more the existing pixels. You can't take a small image an blow it up sixteen times and expect to see more detail. But four times or so are useful.
Of greater importance is the ability to adjust the brightness and contrast. This will bring out details that were in the shadows.
I use this procedure often to look more closely at commercial pictures of products. Sometimes I can read the manufacturers name so that I can go looking elsewhere for a better price.

Willl, what addon or plugin are you using with firefox?
Of course you just have enlargement capabilities and not the brightness adjustments that will bring things out of the shadows.

Got it and you guys are right about the quality dropping. Too bad this computer doesn't act like the ones on CSI where they can spot a pimple on an amoeba, blow it up and it looks like a clear shot of Mt. McKinley. Thanks for the tips
