Pasture Fence...Setting Wood Posts

I am getting ready to build new fence and would like to know if anyone uses crushed rock to set wood corner and brace posts in.

Yes/No? Use another type rock? With fines? What size?

Naw, my Kentucky ground is rocky enough. I have always used whatever dirt came out of the hole. Tamp it tight and come back after the ground settles and tamp again. Line post are 18"-24" deep, corners are are 36" or more if I can. Posts 12' to 15' apart. But it's your fence, build it to you.

I just always use the dirt from the hole. I tamp it hard and if I don't run out of dirt I know I did not do a good job. I run out of dirt about 3 or 4 in from the top of the hole.

Always used treated fence posts and just used hole material.

I'ved used hole material and stone from our gravel road. Both last the same. What still needs to be addressed is why you dig a hole, install a post that's 50 to 75% of the hole diameter, and you are almost shy of filler....

Be sure to tamp in the dirt (or gravel) as soon as the post is set in and a few shovels of filler are there. Don't wait for all the hole to be filled and tamp then. Otherwise the post can tilt.
