Don't know if this is the best place to ask this, but couldn't find a better place.

I have noticed over the past few years that the local farm fields get populated with a pair of pallets leaned up against each other to form a inverted V shape. they are always out near the middle of the field, in a line, and about 500 to 700 feet apart.

Now during the Spring and Summer they are nowhere to be seen, and in late Fall they are out there again. As far as I know (not having been out in the middle of these fields) from driving by every day there is nothing out there that needs protection such as a irrigation pipe, so I can not figure out what purpose they serve. No one is out in those fields over the winter to do damage to anything except maybe some one riding their snowmobile if we get measurable snow which is not too common here.

Could someone explain the reason for these? I see them on more than one farm throughout our county.

I don't know .. Heck I was just throwing out my best guess for the pallets!

Some folks do that to protect young trees mostly from deer snow loads.

Perhaps the farmer uses the pallets to mark which fields get lime applied by the local supplier. He might not lime every field every year - the pallets would make an easy visual to locate which fields are on the lime schedule.

Maybe to keep most of the pallet off the ground so it doesn't rot so fast?
Maybe to provide a range mark on an otherwise featureless field of fire?
Anyone still use iron sights?

what crop is grown in the field?

Are the fields irrigated in the summer time?

So you stopped and asked and the landowner said?

No no no no no no. That's too easy! You know better than asking that question. Besides, we haven't began to see the ridiculous answers yet. Answers like "he is marking each spot where his cattle was abducted by aliens?". 😳

That could very well be it. Are the fields in Roswell, NM?

Snow fences??

Don't think so, there's only two, placed back to back. The snow fence is usually about 30 or 40 feet back from the shoulder, these are at least 400 feet from the road so would have no value as snow fence.

These appearon multiple farms. Crops vary from tomatoes, soybean, and others but I did notice that none of the fields used for corn this past season have them.

I'll have to get some photos next time I have areal camera in the truck, the phone camera is not good enough to show them at these distances.

My buddy keeps round bales on them to keep them from freezing to the ground. Maybe they just stack them up when they take the bales off.

Would You please ask the Landowners? The suspense is getting worse. I'm on my second sandwich reading this thread. Hopefully the correct answer will be posted soon, before I start gaining weight.

Okay I've got it .. Each setup marks a field "Test Plot" .. One can then determine what test works the best .. In this case ... Farmer has asked himself if I set up pallets I can TEST the answers that will be given on a forum and then perhaps I can determine why the other farmers around me are setting up this weird configuration of pallets!!!!

At this very moment said farmer is thinking about THE SNOW STORM that could have an impact on him.
