Oxy/acet tank ownership transfer

I bought my tanks and refilled them at a welding shop in NJ who has since gone out of business. When I moved to PA, I shopped around and found a local dealer who would exchange them. I did have to show him the paperwork I got with the purchase though.

I was a little annoyed at giving him my shiny, well cared for cylinders for a couple of beat up scratched ones though. No worry about getting them tested anymore, so the exchange plan has it's advantages.

Not all of us have a "compressor plant" within reasonable range..... That is why we exchange....

Even some of us with a local compressor plant still do the exchange. The only way that makes sense as far as time goes. I don't want to wait until they are running a fresh batch of bottles or have to make two trips to come back and pick up filled bottles. The other option is if they have 3 or 4 bottles set up, they can trans-fill, but you can't get a bottle completely full that way, close, but not full.

sounds as if it's almost an individual local/company policy that i'll have to explore to make my ownership transfer sale workable. glad i have kept the 50yr old ownership papers intact. thx for the replies, regards

Dad bought med. sized tanks in 1960 and traded up the oxy. tank to the big boy a few years later for a few dollars and even tho I still have his title to them he passed away in 91 and I still exchange them at local dealer which has changed hands many times over the years and as long as the tanks have current test stamping on them they just trade tanks +fill volume and I am out the door.
As to original question,--- tanks and torches sell here at the local auction yard without titles all the time. Never heard of any problems with new owners getting them filled.
The main thing is that you have to go to dealer that handles the brand of your tanks.
Mine happen to be Lindie which is now Praxiar.

Actually Lindie dropped the PRAXAIR name a while back and is now LINDIE.... At least at my dealer and their online website...

I own ALL my bottles and I have all of them filled (not exchanged) as needed at the local Air Gas compressor plant. 6 120's of different gases and 1 dissolved acetylene that I exchange.

Suppose you do your own tank test too?

believe you've nailed what i was looking for. & in terms of stamping, think there must be state time sensitive regs that require periodic testing, mine have been done once. good reply, glad i've got all the docs, regards

I think the testing here is 10 years,--dont quote me on it! different brands/companies may have shorter term on theirs.

He uses enough clout to have a plant built wherever he wants it.

There are owner tanks and rental tanks.

The rental tanks I've seen are about 4 feet tall, and the oxygen tanks usually have an embossed collar with the name of the welding supplier.

The owner tanks can be any size, and have a plain collar.

Lots of used tanks are around the community. You can buy a tank at a welding supply store, or you can buy one used. Talk to your welding supplier about the cost of purchasing a tank or set of tanks to get an idea of what they are worth. After a few trade-ins, there is no difference between a used tank and a newly purchased tank (other than some welding suppliers complaining about the hydrotesting being out of date).

In the past, if you took a rental tank back to the welding supplier, they would simply confiscate it. I've been told that they are a bit more forgiving now, but I won't take my chances. If it looks like a rental, I won't touch it.
