I ended up hiring cb turf (posts on here) to do the mulching. Has done a good job so far. I found a guy that bought/cut my pines from me so now I have the stumps and tops left... partially piled up and partially scattered, ready to be mulched! We're going to start building as soon as we sell our house. If I had to do this over again, I wouldn't change a thing to this point. Thinking about hiring cb turf to possibly hydro seed some parts too though I'm not sure of his work range for that type of thing.

Do you have any pics? what was the price and time frame. I need a similar project done in lower alabama with about the same dense bramble/brush but I am keeping the pines.......removing only a few . I would be very interested to see how yours turned out ......

no pics yet, still have a couple brush piles that I'm waiting for CB turf to come back and grind up. I'll let him tell you his rates. He has since picked up some large federal contracts so I'm not sure of his status on smaller jobs now. It took about 14 hours or so to do the initial mulching. I'm guessing it will now take another 6-8 hours to come back and mulch the piles the stumps left sticking up. So total of about 3 8 hour days. 1/2 of this land was so thick with brush and vines that you could not walk 10 feet if your life depended on it. I am not kidding. So mine was an extreme for 2 acres I believe. CB can probably answer the money and time question a little more accurately since i believe he has a different machine now.

Wow, 24 hours for 2 acres. that is a quite a bit longer than I was expecting. I wonder if much of the land could be bush hogged then whats left be mulched to prevent the sharp stobs and such.

Don't assume some one who removes the trees by cutting are going to remove stumps and rootballs. Get it in writing.

John's (JMER's) job was special because I was demoing a new machine, and a prototype machine to boot so it took a little longer than it should have. We kept switching operators so we all had time to try it out. Not to mention that it really was so thick that you could not even see 10 feet into his woods.
Under normal circumstances his two acre job should have been done in about 1 1/2 days. But he has been a great customer and let us work it out a little slower.

Forgot to mention that in "normal" woods I will easily get 3-5 acres per day. His lot was very far from normal density.

Ill start a new thread but was wondering if these pictures would seem like a job for a mulcher

Oh yeah baby, that would be cake for a mulcher. Jmer's job was 10 times that thick. It really was difficult to walk through his lot.

Man, I've got to agree. that is some fairly thick stuff in your pictures above, but that was an example of the good half of mine. The other half was just ridiculous... worse than that.

Also, to answer your question about bush hogging... good idea, but no, it could not have been bush hogged. I'm not kidding about not being able to walk 10' in parts.

I called around to the land clearing companies and most did not want to talk about mulching......plenty of people to do dozer work. Apparently they are all out of work. I can get dozer work for next to nothin....... I did have a company say they had a skid steer and would "give the mulching attachment a try".. Guess it is not as popular in south Alabama.

Spek, mulching is very popular in south Alabama and prices vary between contractors. It cost to travel. I have worked as far south as Evergreen and Grovehill so far.

Is it usual to pay per hour or per acre or what. I have several people willing to dozer for $75 an hour or less. I have not had anyone with a mulcher call me back.

At minimal I need the 2 acres for house and drain field cleaned and the property lines cleared for fence....What kinda minimum price should I expect to pay? Should I start a new thread?

Prices per acre could range from 500.00 to 1000.00 per acre. Depends on how dense the brush and small trees are. If you get into an area where the small gums or post oaks are thick and growing very close together it takes longer to work productivly.
Your pictures did not seem to indicate that situation. Most people had rather not travel for less than a days work if you are three hours away. Pictures you posted seem to be very mulchable. Meaning a person should be able to mulch and clean your property without much trouble or expense. If you need more answers call me 205-799-9069.
