Truck, trailer jack-knife on Highway 503 | The Columbian

The 2006 Toyota Tacoma...was towing a trailer with 7,500 pounds of lumber ...

The truck went over a slight curve in a grade, jack-knifed, crossed the southbound lane, hit the guardrail and lost its load...

The crash was caused by overloaded trailer weaving...

Sounds serious.

I was thinking when I read the thread header that this was gonna be one of those threads with pics of how people comically overload their vehicles like this:

Sorry for the poor quality shot. I grabbed it with the cell while sitting at the red light. I looked over to my right and this is what I saw. I thought it was a little funny and a good advertising stunt. This place sell mulch, compost, etc. and they have this old dump half buried under a pile of mulch facing out at the intersection. It grabs your attention the first time or two you see it.

i think part of the problem is trucks now have so much power that it is easy to get a heavy load moving and keep it going up hills, but some peole don't think about what it will take to stop that load in a panic situation. I'm not the safety police by any means but there are a lot of people out there that just have no common sense.
Sorry rant over.

What i think happened here: Somebody tried to haul long timber on a short trailer. So they had to let the timber extend over the back of the trailer, causing improper drawbar load. I have turned over a weaving trailer once, the front gate of a borrowed trailer broke off during the trip, causing the timber on top of it to slide down and lift my rear end. I was helpless and could only slam the brakes fully, which caused the car to swing 180 degrees, while overturning the trailer up against a big oak. lucky me.

when hearing "lumber" and "weaving trailer" i automatically think of that incident i've been into :)

Over loading doesn't cause weaving unless it breaks the trailer. Poorly balanced ie loaded with a negative tongue weight does cause weaving.

You can knock an F350 off the road with a trailer at half the tow rating if you load it wrong.
