I think the gun permits should not be public info in the first place, along with many other types of info. If we want to remain private, we can.Just ridiculous! Our personal lives should remain just that, personal...

Like others have said, if a criminal needs a gun (or guns) they have addresses of where they may find some. It's called burglary. Informed crime happens all the time. Criminals are crafty, some read the obits to find homes in which someone has passed to loot when no one is there. Especially older folks who may have lived alone and likely the house may not have anyone living in it temporarily.
They are always looking for helpful information.

I understand your point but am still a little perplexed as to why this information would be harmful to the individual. Why would it mark anyone as more vulnerable or attractive to a criminal than say if they drove a fancy car and wore expensive clothes? I do appreciate the privacy point but am not clear other than just the loss of privacy that there is additional harm.

Yes, I can see that if someone was specifically looking to steal a gun such information would be helpful. Good reason to have a gun safe and alarm system if you keep guns in the house. Again though, it seems to me that the smart cat burglars are typically after much higher value items than just guns. The dumb average criminal would probably not have the wherewithal to be able to plan on how to steal a gun based on a newspaper article. Why bother when guns are so easily obtained by other means?

I went to the Journal's website to see who had the permits and you can easily navigate to each home listed from the google map. That's very personal for the public media to provide to the world. The person(s) in charge of the newspaper obviously have used their paper to further their political beliefs, most "news"papers save this sort of thing for the editorial page as it is not "news". Different values in different locales, however, I do not patronize or support someone who openly disregards my privacy and I will encourage my friends to do the same. The power of the dollar sometimes is more powerful than the pen. Ink and cyberspace require funding.

I see no value in publishing the names and addresses of the individuals that have permits. I do see value in showing the number of permits in a town or county.
It does not surprise me that the newspaper in question was owned by Gannett. It is a large newspaper conglomerate who's stock has fallen dramatically over the last decade.
I read a comment in the article by Roy Clark at the Poynter Institute. I read information from them almost daily. They have a huge influence on the newspaper industry. It's pretty bad when a pro-journalism institute does not support your journalism....
Roy Clark, a senior scholar at the Poynter Institute, a Florida-based journalism think tank, said publishing the data was "too indiscriminate."
He, too, compared the maps to similar efforts involving sex-offender registries or lists of those arrested for driving under the influence, noting that such a move is usually done to indicate a serious problem that requires a neighbor or parent to maintain vigilance.
"You get the connotation that somehow there's something essentially wrong with this behavior," he said of the gun permit database.
"My predisposition is to support the journalism," Clark said. "I want to be persuaded that this story or this practice has some higher social purpose, but I can't find it."

IMO...having to have a permit to keep a handgun in your home is "outrageous"

Naive. James Burke, characterized in Goodfellas, was clever enough to steal 6 million dollars or so on the Lufthansa heist. Petty criminals are just that; others can be quite resourceful but choose to live outside the law and decent society. Why give them any ammunition?
Besides, finding things in Google presents no challenge. For example, do you live on Roger Williams Lane and is that your Kubota tucked into the small stand of trees on the right side of the photo?
