Our first copperhead this year

Not much in the way of deadly snakes in Ohio but we do have a problem with garden-type snakes eating the toads out of our large gardens. We used to see dozens of toads and they did a gret job eating all the dead bugs that fell from our outdoor barn and yard lights. Really cleaned up the mess.
Then I saw one snake and thought it was neat so let's go along to get along. But we noticed a severe drop in toad #'s and saw more snakes. I have whacked a few snakes and toads are improving so maybe we can strike a balance.

Copperheads are fairly common in our area. I killed one at the front driveway gate last year. Have to go. The weather just stated that we are in a Tornado Watch until 11:00pm.

IMO most aggressive snake around this region
Cottonmouth (aka : watermoccasin)
Pigmy Rattler
Eastern Diamondback
Coral Snake
Pythons

:)

Boone

Boone, we have both Copperheads and Watermoccasins here and I detest both equally. Usually when I'm out on the property I have a rifle and maybe a pistol, for Hogs and coyotes. But this time of the year I have a shotgun. It at least can scare off the hogs and coyotes, but the snakes I want dead. I have used pistols and rifles to kill snakes and my Marksmanship is good but in this case I want it better.

With all the water we have around this year I may have to go shopping for some Snake Boots.

Great idea Charlie ! (snake boots)
Just don't do what I did when I was a young whippersnapper and leave them out on back porch cause took them of because the were wet/muddy from hunting. Next day when I went too put them on I stuck my foot in one like a dummy didn't shake it upside down. Felt something alive in there and yanked it off quick to find fortunately just a garter snake. :( :)
I only had too learn that lesson once. ;)

Boone

"whippersnapper"
Noun:
"A young and inexperienced person considered to be presumptuous or overconfident".

Killed one last year by the porch. The wife and I were cleaning up leaves and debris with our hands working within inches of the snake but did not see it until almost too late. I held it down with something handy and the wife beat it to death with a shovel. Agressive little fella, and had some nice fangs to show us. I realize he was just trying to make a living, but he was just too close to our "area of operations" so he was eradicated with "extreme prejudice"

He crawled out of the burn pile after I lit it up. I smacked him a couple of times with the leaf rake. He's a bit skinny, hasn't fatten up since winter hibernation.

Good picture. I would recognize that as a copperhead any day. The dumbell shaped markings are a dead give away. BTW, copperheads emit a very pungent musk; lots of times you can smell them before you can see them.

I don't know that copperheads are as aggressive as much as just stealthy and by the time you see 'em you are so close as to provoke a bite response. They don't retreat when they sense somethings up, they just get all still.

I stepped behind a mulch/leaf pile to take a p once. My buddy said "Whoa! There's a snake there!"

And I said, "Yeah, buddy, it is!"
He said "No a copperhead, you must have stepped over"

I looked down and saw that and I just kind of levitated back onto the trail like those gals in "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon". Then he got a shotgun and I blew the snakes head clean off.

I walked in the outhouse yesterday, spent 10 leisurely minutes listening to my sweet new weather radio, and TCB... walked out, closed door, and dang near stepped on this guy. Good thing I had just evacuated. Dang watersnakes look a lot like copperheads when your shrieking like a little girl.

That why I have snakeshot in the first 2 chambers of my 357 mag revolver. Easy to carry, works for everything including snakes.
