Hey guys:
This is off-topic, but I'm not quite sure where to ask it. Is it possible to power a normal hydraulic bottle jack off of a source rather than the pump built-in to it? I'm wondering if you can take the plug out (the one you loosen to lower the jack) and attach a hose to it. The other end of the hose would NOT be attached to a Power-trac (I'm anticipating that question... /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif), it would be hooked to a remote hydraulic hand-pump like you find with the porta-power hydraulic kits (and maybe in the future, a air-over-hydraulic pump or an electric hydraulic pump... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif).
Has anyone tried this before? Seems to me like it ought to work...since you loosen the plug to lower the jack. Anyone have any idear if this will work?
Why am I asking? Well, I've got one of those Harbor Freight hydraulic pipe benders (the type that's built around a hydraulic bottle jack), and it's a real pain to use on the floor. I'm thinking of mounting it in a way that would be a little easier to use, but it will also get in the way of pumping the handle, so I'd like to hook up a different hand pump that I already have. Plus, in the future it sure would be nice to operate the thing off of a non-me power source! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I'm looking at getting some dies made that will allow me to bend square tubing without collapsing the sidewalls...I'll let you know how this turns out...that cheap little pipe bender is actually pretty powerful...the biggest shortcoming is lack of dies for anything other than pipe.
