o'rings

Many of these O rings in various places on these tractors are Japanese spec O rings...not even metric but a special size. Several I have had to get from Hoye cause I could not source any local even at big industrial parts houses.

I have pitched the idea to Hoye about making up an oring kit to sell. Something with all the common ones in there. Since I have their ear again with this post I will bring it up again!! Aaron, I know I would buy one if it was availible, the next order I had, nothing worse than not having one when you need it and your part guy is a 3 or 4 day delivery away!!!

An O ring kit is an interesting idea, but luckily it is also easy to order online. Where did you get the idea about special unique O rings? I find it hard to believe that anyone would deliberately design something to use a unique O ring instead of simply changing the part dimension.

I completely agree with clemsonfor about the unique O-rings. I have run into that several times on the Yanmars. I have both an sae and metic o-ring kit from Harbor freight and more than once there was nothing in either kit that would fit the Yanmar. The Japanese specs are definitely unique.

I have worked on an oring kit a couple times over the years. The problem always ends up deciding what all to include. When you are talking about a normal o-ring that costs $0.05 it is easy to just throw in anything and everything that might possibly be needed. Yanmar uses mostly JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) orings which are more difficult to find in the US and are more expensive. Some of those o-rings cost me over $1ea and that can make an o-ring kit get expensive pretty quickly.

rScotty's link does have a kit that 'meets JIS standards' so that might be interesting to see how many of them match the orings Yanmar uses. The kit is fairly inexpensive. I might buy one just to check out.

EDIT: I just looked through my top 10 best selling o-rings and the kit only had two of the sizes. It might still be worth having but looks like it will still be missing a lot of the common Yanmar sizes.

If you look into an o-ring size chart then you will realize that the harbor freight kits are a fraction of the available o-ring sizes.

there Japanese spec, not just simple metric on many spots. I put new o rings on the lift arms where they always weep. I looked all over, in my kits SAE and metric, my loggers and even a big parts house for industrial supplies..similar to a grainger but more local. No luck except random places online even knowing size. I just ordered from hoye and waited the 3 days. If you worked on stuff you know what i am talking about. All my loggers have kits for their equipment. Like Tigercat has a kit for all the common o rings on the machine and John Deere also has the same thing for the forestry equipment. They don't have to pull out all sorts or random kits to get the oring for the o ring on the hose to the grapple boom for example its in the JD kit or whatever.

Very true! We STOCK about 150 different Yanmar o-ring part numbers right now. I just did a quick report and Yanmar lists about 500 o-ring part numbers in their catalog. Some of those in the Yanmar catalog probably interchange but still...

That is good info, thanks Aaron. I see your point about the kit becoming expensive when you throw in 4 each or random sizes at $1 each. HOw are these things that expensive for you even if they are rare here? i would imagine many are made in china...i would think you could order a lot of 300 of them or whatever and the price would get way down? I am not in purchasing for a company so i do not have these connections nor know what is involved with import fees etc and the hassle with customs if your buying hundreds of dollars of stuff like that but i would think that you do this with other parts? I am hung up on the $1 your price for an o ring thing, that seems like robbery???

I hate to think this wont happen. BUt i guess we just live with the current system, wait till we need it and order from you, and just suck it up if we need it faster. Its not worth driving all over to me just to visit 3 or 4 places and not find it and in 2 of them they look at you like your crazy when you say its not a metric just jap Industrial standard size.

Oh and don't think those JD or Tigercat kits come cheap!! haha

That is absolutely true but, with some of those o-rings, 300pc would last me 57 years and the rubber (and me) would have turned to dust by the time the last one was sold. :laughing:
