Opossums

At nite, in the pastures, fine. Good mousers and ratters. Anywhere during the day is target practice, Including with the FEL if that is all that is around. Also anywhere around the homestead, anytime. I like my herding dog way too much. Same for skunks, more rabies carriers ( do not get sick but a lot of them have it here).

Your possum is probably heavily injured. About the only time have seen nature tolerate people is when they are too hurt to do anything about it. Some livestock as well. Or could be it was too ill before the attack to go out and be a possum so was trying to find easier pickings. Who knows if whatever gave it the injuries had some other disease.

Knew one person who took in a stray dog because they felt sorry for it. The next month all of the farm dogs had to be wormed and all manner of external parasites take care of including tape worms. What other people drop off may not be the healthiest on the planet. Same goes for other critters that find your place acceptable.

The last possum i found in the barn during the day was summarily dispatched and put in the burn barrel. So many fleas and ticks tried to run off that i was glad the 'cooker' was all fired up!! Not something i wanted around my animals. Although stuffing it for the coffee table came to mind!

Reminds me of the neighbor. Found a skunk wandering around outside one nite and yelled into the house to not let the dogs out. Daughter heard Let the dogs out!! The rest of the nite was spent trying to get the smell out of the sprayed dogs. Now know liquid smoke works well rubbed into the fur (of the dog, not the skunk).

A possum that doesn't grin and hiss at you when you come close and then run off is truly sick... go ahead and kill it.... all good reasons are listed by others...

I'll add that they are NOT endangered in any way so you are not removing a rare critter from the breeding population. It's hurt, it hurts, put it out of its misery, avoid further complications to you and yours.

It does hiss and show its teeth. It really doesn't want to be bothered at all. I think its going to be fine. I know its not rare at all, I just will let it live if it will, ultimately miles from my house. There is a lot of woods around.

Thanks Scotty!
Actually, I've got my share of options at home in the safe.:D
Small caliber to large, even a small M11, though 32 rounds in the blink of an eye hardly seems sporting.:)

shv - - you have to do what you have to do. You say you will release hime. But even though there's lots of woods around your house, the possum gravitated to your homestead.

I've dispached two in the last couple of months - - my wife wanted me to re-locate them but to do so would be to create a problem for someone else. Obiously, he didn't stay in the woods in the 1st place or you and he would not have crossed paths.
