It does hiss and show its teeth. It really doesn't want to be bothered at all. I think its going to be fine. I know its not rare at all, I just will let it live if it will, ultimately miles from my house. I'll add that they are NOT endangered in any way so you are not removing a rare critter from the breeding population. It's hurt, it hurts, put it out of its misery, avoid further complications to you and yours.
