Mowing opinions on a good 10' rotary cutter for our 5250

We are looking for a new 10' rotary cutter for our JD 5220. Can we have some opinions on really good ones?

Thanks for any help.

We have a Howse right now but it just does not hold up to good.

I have a LandPride 8ft HD and a Woods 12ft HD both these are good cutters.
The only thing I like better about my Woods is the flat deck(just easier to clean).
Have pics if u like to see them!!

what model of howse do you have?

I have the HD 10' model and it's a beast. had it for 7ys now.. deck metal is even thicker than my JD batwing.

I've knocked down 4" trees before with it on a wide swing. For years it ran behind a 95hp tractor before I moved it to a 70hp tractor.

I've yet to damage it enough to even scratch all the way thru the paint on the deck.

I like the look of the Rhino Turbo series. I'm thinking of getting one in 8', semi-mounted. Possiblely with the hydraulic offset option.

This was my old howse (10ft shown)I used the crap out of(never replaced anything but blades 6yrs)but I dont think the new ones are made the same!

I second the Woods brand I have a DS96 (the 8' pull type version). One thing to keep in mind is these mowers run a good bit wider than the cut width. For example the DS96 (96" cut is actually around 104" wide over all). Just something to consider if you have width restrictions.

I have a Rhino SE 10 Semi Mount , it cuts good and is built well , Blades are very are easy to service , Just keep them sharp ! All around I'm happy with it

I have a 10' Williams/Hardee/Tiger pull-type cutter. (no longer made) Built like a tank. Weighs about 3000 pounds. It's close to 20 years old and the only repairs have been a broken input shaft on one of the side gearboxes, and a couple of pillow block bearings for the PTO shaft. The broken shaft was the result of hitting a hardwood stump while the cutter was beeing pulled by a 100 hp tractor. The busted bearings were the result of trying to cross a creek channel while the PTO shaft was still turning. (just ran out of travel) So, other than operator stupidity, (mine) there have been zero breakdowns.

I also have a Rhino SE7 7' single spindle cutter that is 3-pt hitch. It's considered a medium duty machine. Overall, it's been good, but I've bent the side skirt in a couple of places and I had to replace the tail-wheel because it kept bending. (and it's only about 5 years old) I wish that I had spent a few hundred more for a heavy duty cutter.

I said all that to say this: Nobody I know of has ever regretted buying a cutter that was TOO HEAVY DUTY!

If you are tearing up the cutter you have now, I would suggest that you don't buy an "economy" model, or even the "medium duty" of any brand. Go ahead and pony up for a heavy duty or even a commercial duty cutter.
