3-Point Hitch operation

I have a JD 4440 and purchased a 3 point quick and a JD709 mower. I am having trouble getting the mower to stay in the position that I want. What is the knob by my right leg do and how does it work. Can someone tell me speciffically how the lever works and any adjustments?

I assume that you are talking about the knob on the side in an arced slot. Loosen, push all the way down and tighten. Now your 3 point is in Position mode allowing you to set the mower with the hitch. When you pull the same knob all the way up, you are in Draft mode, ready to operate a draft implement such as a plow. Moving the knob anywhere in the middle gives you a mix of both modes.
