Online auctions?

I'm looking to add a piece of equipment to my stable and have seen some like what I want at online auctions. A couple of questions for the group.

1. Are they reputable. Specifically, I was looking at Auctiontime and Richie brothers, and I think I saw one called Purple.
2. Besides the buyers premium, sales tax and wire transfer fee, are there any other fees to look for?
3. What have been your experiences buying from these type of places.
4. Are there any other online auctions where I should look for farm and or light construction equipment.

Richie Brothers and Big Iron are the only ones I’ve heard of. I’ve got no personal experience buying from these places but are you comfortable buying sight unseen? I wouldn’t be unless it’s something like a blade or other lower priced item.

My son has bought a couple items from a local online auction where he could physically drive to site and look at equipment before bidding. He said to be sure to read ALL the fine print since there are potentially some hidden or unexpected fees explained in the fine print.

Purple Wave. That's the one a local rental shop used to sell something I was interested in. We have a local farm equipment auction in Miner MO called Dewitt. they have a big auction I believe first Monday of every month.

Proxibid is used by most local auction houses - there are the normal fees for internet bidding, and then the auction fees, state tax if applicable.

I have seen good deals on attachments and would not have any issues buying site unseen, but for anything mechanical would prefer to have eyes on it and see it running etc.

Which means getting a local appraiser/mechanical inspection done.

Just to follow-up, I have bought sight unseen before and have done well. Not that that means I couldn't get burned, obviously. Also, what I'm looking to buy is one of the new inexpensive Chinese mini-excavators. I figure I'm less likely to get burned on a new piece than a used piece.

Most of the auctions on Proxibid (under industrial equipment) have the Chinese mini excavators. just know what to look for.

I would stay away from the small gas units and look for diesel and they usually have an 18 or 20 as part of their model designation (roughly meaning 1.8 or 2 T) which actually are 2800-3300Lbs)

I have seen the diesel's go for $7K which after 10-12% fees, tax you're in it for $8K which is not bad, but you can pay $9-9.5K (Terror XVIII like mine) from ebay delivered to your door.

Jeff Martin is reliable and they have locations throughout the US. I’ve bought from them in the past. There’s a location 1 hour from me so I can inspect/ look at any items I’m interested in. Easy to deal with also. Don’t know your location but check them out as you can do online if you choose. They do currently have some Mini Excavators currently on Auction.

I sold a skid steer and a wood chipper through Iron Planet which is part of Richie Brothers. They send out an inspection person who goes through a checklist and the results are included in the posting so potential buyers have a third party perspective of the items. For machines they typicallly video them running, moving, operating, etc. so you can have some info to support your bids. They will state what does not work, what they did not test, etc. My items had no issues and both sold easily at the time. You can ususally tell what is ex-rental or private owned items.

I just bought a Chinese baby digger off of a local auction. The only thing to keep in mind is the buyer's premium. I personally wouldn't buy anything without seeing it first.

Personal experience with Richie Bros. Stay away from them like the plague. Buyer beware was a saying specifically for them.

not sure what you have for your area, I haven't had much luck at the online auctions as of late. I use ISA (Integrity Sales & Auction) with multiple locations etc. and they have been honest by far, been looking for grapple bucket and possibly a better dump truck, not a big one, like an F600 etc. Worst place was Hansen Auction Group, dishonest online auction. I was bidding on a grapple bucket that I wanted and at the last 1 minute I got high bid...then Hansen kept changing the end time and they did this on purpose to raise the bid amounts. Read the site everywhere and then got mad and contacted them, they said that's what happens and that the sellers can change the end time anytime they want...WTF? that's not an auction, was a big joke. So be careful, on where and who you bid with.

Too bad you're not closer. I have a CA non compliant Ford dump truck I would sell. It's been reduced to a ranch truck.

I would also check out the government auction sites such as public surplus and govdeals. Each locality/state uses different auction sites so you will have to figure out which are being used by your local governments.

I have scored some really good buys on shop tools such as buffers, table saws, sanders, etc. mostly from local public schools. I also see a fair amount of ag stuff going off as well.

I was pretty comfortable with auctiontime since they are affiliated with Tractorhouse and Iron Planet. I ended up winning an auction for an SDLE20 with the Yanmar diesel in it. I'm hoping to pick it up next week. I will report back on my experience.

Was this a case where there was a large change in the end time or was it one of those typical clauses that any bid in the last 1 minute adds 2 minutes to the end time for possible additional bids, and will continue until no more bids are received.

I know Auctiontime has that disclaimer. Any bid in the last minute adds 40 seconds to the end time. As I was bidding on the machine that I ended up winning, it wasn't always 40 seconds. Sometimes it was less than that but never more than 40 seconds. I didn't find it to be a bad thing honestly. I always thought it was a bit wrong to be able to "snipe" something in the last second at an auction and not let the other person have a chance to respond.
