Most auctions do this now - a bid in the last minute extends the bid another minute which I think is fair and is the way auctions work.

I was bidding on a Kubota B26 on eBay with a max bid 2K higher - and was winning at 28K until the last 15 seconds someone won for just over 30 as I could not bid fast enough - that was aggravating to get sniped like that.

Be aware of the fees when you buy a smaller item. We bought a box blade and we are happy with it, BUT after the fees, we could have just gone down to Tractor Supply and bought one for the same price.

Not complaining because we're happy with the box blade, but now we know for next time.

Yes, I looked at the buyer fees. I was looking at a few different minis and 2 of them had a 15% fee and one had an 11% fee. I adjusted my max bid accordingly and won the one that had the 11% fee.

Here is a completed auction link from NW WI (10% buyers fee). There must be a huge demand for mini (gas) excavators, because they have this auction every 3 or 4 weeks. It will give you an idea of the prices they are fetching.

Was this a case where there was a large change in the end time or was it one of those typical clauses that any bid in the last 1 minute adds 2 minutes to the end time for possible additional bids, and will continue until no more bids are received.
No, the seller who the auctioneer represented, was allowed to change the end time of the auction until the sellers felt they would accept said price for their grapple bucket.

Was on an online auction last night were the entire auction was linked to a single end time. So 205 items that would close at the same time. And if anybody bid on a single item with less than 5 minutes to end of auction all items would extend 5 minutes. I was high bidder on an items that should of closed at 5PM but because everybody was bidding on other items my item kept getting extended. At about 6:20 somebody bumped my high bid. The auction finally ended about 7PM last night. So basically the terms of the auction awards people that show up 2 hours late.

Most online auctions have two sets of conditions that you need to be aware of. The online site is often a clearing house that has their conditions, and then each auction company that uses them has their own set of conditions and fees. Besides the usual buyers premium, sales tax and wire transfer fees, some will add 2-4 percent if you use a credit card. Some industrial auctioneers will add a rigging fee for every item. I once had to pay a $5 "rigging fee" to hand carry a 6ft. folding table out to my truck. Make sure you factor them into your bids. Some auctions will require a deposit before you can bid. No big deal if you can use a credit card for it. They won't charge the card if you don't win a bid. But at least one requires certified check or wire transfer, so you lose that cost regardless.

Well, I picked up my won auction item this past Friday. First picture is in his loading yard in South Dakota before I strapped it down, and the second one is in my driveway in Indiana.
