Hello everyone. I was hoping someone could give me so advice on how to remove the camshaft out of a onan b48g. After mowing yesterday I noticed the engine sounded as if it had a rod knocking but on further inspection the noise is coming from the back of the engine by the flywheel. After pulling the motor off and removing the timing cover I found a large amount of play in the rear cam bearing. Almost enough to allow it to skip time. Upon trying to remove the cam it slides out approx 3/4 inch and stops. I've removed the points and the push rod for them and also the lifters. But it still won't come out of the engine block. Sounds as if its hitting something. I didn't know if I had to remove the crank first or what was going on. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance nick.

the fan flywheel is actually the FRONT of the engine. ( on basically all air cooled engines )
it sounds that your front cam brg may have moved in
toward the center of the block.
normally, you should not have to remove the crank to remove the cam.
in your case you may have to cut the cam and remove it from the bottom.,
which means removing the crank, rods, pistons etc.
feel free to call 651 437 2826 if you need.
thank you. boomer ( the used onan engine parts guy )

Thanks for the advice. I can see that the block is all ovaled out from the cam bearing failure so have decided to go with the Briggs van guard repower kit since the coat to rebuild the onan is fairly close to the cost of a new factory engine. Thanks for the help. Nick.
