Hi folks, I know some of y'all are probably tired of me asking about different tractors but I found one I'm going to look at right now and I'm looking for any advice or experience on this model. If all checks out with it I'll probably bring it home. It's a 70s model 2040, low hrs but was outdoors and has been painted. Any opinions on these?
Thanks

There was just a thread cautioning folks to be careful buying newly painted tractors...not always a bad thing but sometime unscrupulous sellers will cover leaks and defects with patch work covered by paint..I would just suggest with that in mind , if I were you , I would drive the tractor and try and put it under some load, also see if the seller will hook up a bush hog so you can try the PTO and 3 pt. lift...check the fluids and see if he has a record of his maintenance...I'm sure others will have more to ad...Also do a quick search here on TBN for buying used tractor checklist...there was a good thread not too long ago with a lot of good suggestions...Good Luck..

Ya know we should make a page about this for future customers. All about checking out a used tractor? Checking out a freshly painted tractor, and a page on what to check out when the Ford N series won't start or crank? Just sayin...?I don't have the charm to be able to post it here? Grinnin..

Thanks that sounds like real solid advice. I am a little skeptical because it sounds like a real good deal on a low hr machine. The fellow sounds real straightforward but he may not know all the history on it either. I'll keep y'all posted and we'll see. Any other opinions on 2040s in general appreciated! Thanks

I think this was one of the rare occasions where it was just a good deal. 1306hrs, just a few areas had been painted, hood and around 3 PT hitch but it has been used since then. I paid 4500&, I think I got a good deal. Everything works great, real tight tractor. Pics when I get home!!

Sounds like a real good price and those are real low hours.
What trans does it have? HI-LO & Reverer can be expensive to repair.

Thanks folks, im excited with it. It has 4 gears on the right and high, low, and reverse on the left. Is that the same tranny? This one seems to work fine though. What are the symptoms of tranny trouble? From what I can tell the only thing I can see eventually needing a clutch but its goo to go for now.

2040 for $4500 and 1300 hours? Terrible, you paid too much, I'll be right over to take it off your hands:D Good find!

Lol thanks guys! I hated to turn loose of the money but after I checked it out I couldn't drive away without it. It's not perfect but it's alot better than I expected. I'm pretty sure the tranny is regular collar shift but correct me if I'm wrong, it's got two shifters on the floor- right side is 1-4, left side is park, low, hi, and reverse. Which gives me 8x4 I guess you'd call it.
