On road safety

/ On road safety #22
I've taken to the road a few times this year. My daughter lives a few miles from my house, and I have let her have the tractor when she needs it. I simply make the journey early on Sunday morning when I know I won't see more than half a dozen other vehicles between Point A and Point B. The morning air is refreshing.

Not much you can do with idiots on the road. When I am turning left with people behind, I will use a hand signal and turn signals. The JD 8530 & 9330, both have turn signals. When there is no on coming traffic, a couple of hundred feet prior to turning, I will drive the tractor and take up most of the on coming traffic lane, both preventing them from passing as well as forcing them to pay attention that I am serious about making a left turn.

With a much smaller compact tractor, and cars behind, assuming I can, it is much safer to pull off the road on the right side and wait for a safe clear moment. Just because the guy behind you is patient, another car for several vehicles back will always tray to be stupid.

I do a lot of roading. On some of the older ag tractors are amost hard to keep in your lane, there sterring has play to say the least.
Turn your bright head lights on. this gets attention quicker than not. Wear your seat belt incase you get clipped. At least you will stay in the seat that way.
I have found with any tractor stay closer to the yellow center line. I have many that get rude and try to hit me on the way back in front of me. (scary, can put stripes in my under wear) I do have big mirrors and there my best friend. When they start to pass I inch over closer to the center line but I do not touch it. this normaly gets ther attention and most of the time they pull completly into the other lane. I have found slight swerving is an attension getter. This makes them not to trust you. It does help.
I farther I stay away from the center line the more problems I have, people will pass any where and theres not much room between you. Does matter if any one is comeing at us or not. They act like your not suppose to be out there.
I have better luck in the dark. Untill they get close to me they have no idea how wide I am. They normally proceed with caution after dark.
I have always wanted to add a 1/4" x 2" flat bar 1' wider than the left side of the loader bucket. It would take off a bunch of car mirrors.
