i have a 609 deere rotary mower. the shear bolt (grade 3) on the pto drive shaft keeps shearing. apparently, the 609 has a slip clutch. can i use a grade 5 bolt for the shear bolt?

Z-Michigan said:I'm a bit confused - if you have a slip clutch you should not have a shear bolt. The slip clutch may be under a plastic cover but it should be pretty obvious due to its size. Does your particular 609 cutter have a slip clutch?

I have an LX5 and I keep breaking the sheer bolts. I replace them with John Deere parts, so that is not the issue. I will try your advice to loosen and slip the clutch. Many thanks! If your LX5 has a slip clutch - then you have a drive pin, not a shear pin. The drive pin is a metric 10x85 grade 12.8 bolt.
If you are using SAE - you'll keep breaking them as they are too small in diameter.
If you shear the 12.8 - then it is because your slip clutch is froze up. You need to loosen the pressure bolts and slip the clutch a few times. Then tighten the bolts and gap according to spec.
