I decided to change the fuel filter on my backhoe just because I haven't done it since I purchased it from the previous owner, after replacing it the tractor starts up but then dies out after 10 or 15 seconds but then it will fire right back up and then stall again. I went ahead and replaced the mechanical fuel pump just to make sure it wasn't bad and it still does the same thing. Could air in the system cause this?

Do you have good fuel flow at fitting(parts key 24) with line nut loosened when handle on lift pump is activated? If so check fitting(parts key 23) that contains a check valve for plugging. This check valve has a long history of plugging giving the same symptoms as you describe.

Jim I am away from the tractor until Saturday but I drained the fuel tank before i left it to make sure it wasn't full of trash and found a bunch of black goo in the bottom so I am going to clean that out then do what you said, do I loosen number 24 in the diagram and pump the manual lever? And if I have good flow there what do I do about the check valve in number 23? Replace it? Or is there a way to clean it? Thanks a lot for the info!
