Old troy bilt horse, Should I replace the old hh60?

I was rototilling today with my 6 hp Tecumseh Troybilt and I thought of this thread. Do you have your belt on the low speed setting? I think with the 6 hp, the belt should be on the larger lower pulley (the larger of the two) if yours is like mine. When I use mine on the high speed pulley it bogs down like you are talking about. Even on low speed it is a little under powered, but the old school in me likes the cast iron HH60.

Maybe I am doing some thing wrong but I only have the ability to select high and low speed and forward and reverse. I thought the tines only have one speed and the high and low only affects tire speed. Is this correct.

My son's new lawn push mower was stalling in even short grass. I read up on adjusting the carb and fixed it in around 10 minutes. No parts were needed, I hope you have the same success.

There are the big fast/slow levers and also two belt positions right behind the engine (effectively you have two high speeds and two low speeds). The belt has to be changed manually with the engine off and spark plug disconnected. This is kind of a slow and over complicated video on how to change the belt to the lower range. Check yours first, you might already be on low range.

My model horse has two belts, two pulleys off the driveshaft and two pulleys off the "transmission" input. They both engage when the tiller is put in forward. I think thats how its suppose to work. thanks for the input.

Yes, I installed the predator from harbor frieght. It was pretty straight forward. I am having a few little problems but so far the predator is much stronger then the old hh60. I really believe this is a good cheap way to repower a old horse. I have had one issue with the predator. The gas tank leaks at the seams, I wonder if I'm the only one or is this just a quality problem in this price range. Its really frustrating to put in 4 hours of work to have it wasted by something as simple as low quality tank. The Predator does have impressive power and runs very smooth. The one question I have is about the pulleys. My horse was running two pulleys, two belts. This is from the previous owner. I dont see why two pulleys would be neccesary....

Are the two top pulleys the same size? The bottom pulleys the same size?

As far as Chinese engines go, you will find lower quality in general, but you aren't paying as much so it is a trade off. Personally, I like keeping the old iron in condition.
