Old JD Disk Info Needed

Thanks Dapper, I'll check and see about gettting the scrapper I'm missing. Now all I have to do is mount the new control valve on my tractor and I can see how it works behind it.

Hi Everyone, I'm new here I just joined.

I'm interested in this JD KBA Disc post as I just bought one of these. It's in pretty good shape. Yes a bit rusty but very complete from what I can tell. the hyd cylinder came with it which I was glad of that because I have seen some for sale without the cylinder. I will probably restore mine as well when I get a minute. I will try to post pics soon if I can, not sure that I know how? One thing that I did notice in looking at mine and also lot of pictures of these discs is that the very outer scrapers seem to be either missing, removed or maybe never installed right from JD. It seems to be that way on every one I've seen. I'm kinda wondering if they were shipped that way? Don't know or maybe they were removed by all of the owners for some reason. Does anyone know the answer to that?

Thanks

I will be asking more questions soon thanks and what a great site for info.

Welcome SeeSaw, glad to have you on board. If you read my post, you know that my disk also did not have the outside scrapers. Most tell me that they were not needed and very seldom included, as the mud that would build up there would just fall away. I put a set on anyway, and it is kind of an insurance thing in case I loose one of the other scrapers, I will still have a replacement.... What kind of HYD cylinder does your disk have? Mine had the original square JD cylinder, which I blew out the side of in about 2 days. Seems the old cylinder was not made to hold up to the new pressure on newer tractors. Just completely blew out the side of the casting on the cylinder body. I have since replaced with new cylinder, and have no problems. Just kind of wanted to keep the old JD to make it original. Oh Well. Always something... Enjoy your old disk, and let me know if you need any information. PS, Pictures are a MUST!

The pin on the cylinder is to be used in conjunction with the disk to limit the cylinder rod travel. I bought one of those cylinders new in the 70's, haven't seen one since then.

We have a 14' disk similar to this one that we are reworking this spring.

Thanks Dapper,

Yes actually I read all of your posts and every one elses too. Just was not sure if you knew that the scrapers appeared to be omitted on all discs. Thanks. I looked at the hydraulic cylinder on yours and figured that yours was even more correct than mine since yours is painted green and has a stop of some sort on it. Not sure yet what kind of cylinder mine has on it yet cause i did not look that close but it appears to be just a regular old black hyd cylinder w/o the stop like yours has. I learned something more about these right there with that cylinder info. I did not know that before. Too bad you blew that one out with the pressure that stinks. Took pictures of mine last night and was going to bring my didital camera to work today and load the pictures but I walked out and forgot the camera. I will post the pics as soon as I can. Thanks again lots of good info. Oh yeah BTW, that p/n for the manual that you spoke about with all of the part numbers in it... I could not find that any where, where did you get it? Thanks

SeeSaw, if I were you I'd drain the hydraulic cylinder before using it. Take off both hoses, hang them to drain, it will take a while. Then drain out what will run out of the cylinder, and then moving the piston back and forth to get out the rest, from each port. Caution, when you move the piston the fluid will spurt out, because the piston will stick and then jump an inch.
By doing this you will keep a bunch of crud, possibly water, and certainly unknown condition and brand of fluid from mixing with your tractor's fluid.
Now would be a great time to put on all new hoses if there is any visible damage on the old ones. And take the time to tape them together and make them the right length for your setup, strain relieve them, etc.

Hi Jim Thanks for the input. I was already thinking what you were saying and I already removed the Cylinder from the disc so I can drain the old fluid out. I had already found some cracking in the rubber on the hydraulic lines so I know I will be replacing those as well. Got a couple pictures loaded too. I already have the cyl removed in the photos.

I have owned several of these discs over the years and they are one of the best cutting discs you will find. Once they get some age on them, the dowell (bullet) that is in the box bearings wears and need to be replaced. There is a Keystock "work around" to solve that problem for as long as you own the disc. C-Saw,
Thanks for pics. Looks like you have same disk. I was impressed that you also have the original pin in the toung for hooking up to the bar. they are rare to find now. :)
Yea, I hated loosing the cylinder. I believe it to be origination also, or at least of the period.
Jimgerkin makes good point about treatment for any old cylinder that has not been in use recently. I had done all as he suggests, and still lost the cylinder. I believe it just to be newer tractor higher pressure, or perhaps bad casting. I replaced the JD with one I had around and it works well, but I appreciate authentic , know what I mean?
C-Saw. I googled the book part number (KBA "OM-B16-153") and came up with this. 5 John Deere Operator's Manual Disk Harrow - eBay (item 120543534417 end time Mar-21-10 17:22:44 PDT) Hope this copys...
I was able to use mine last year on a bottom field I usually plow, and it was a job for my TN65 to pull it and a drag. (actually had to drop the drag a couple of times) My bottom field is soft and fluffy and full of sand and is usually a bit of a job for this size tractor, plowing with 3-14s. My 8 footer is all I want for this job. Seem to do a great job cutting. Will try again this spring with same set up. Let me know if you are able to check out the fleebay manual.

Dapper,

Don't know what I'm doing wrong. I googled it and searched that number on E-bay and came up with a big fat goose egg both times.
