Oiling the shed

Hi guys...I need to put something on my shed for preservation. It's a 5 year old shed made of rough cut hemlock. I've heard that old motor oil mixed with a little diesel (like 4:1) works wonders. Is this true? Can I apply the mix with a garden sprayer?

I did my trailer deck boards with 5-20 synthetic and a roller, works like a charm

I don't know if that mixture (4:1) will spray in a pump sprayer or not. Seems a little thick. Maybe 50/50 with a 30 weight oil...not sure. I've never tried a sprayer, I'm just speculating.

An old paintbrush or roller as mentioned by Jimi will work fine. It'll stink for a while, but will subside. Once dry, it will repel water and termites won't bother it. You don't have to go "thick". It'll soak into rough cut rather quickly, making you think it needs more, but you don't.

I am using 1/3 kerosene, 1/3 used deep fryer fat and 1/3 thompson water seal on dried pine clapboard. I filter the fryer oil via sieve and cloth prior to mixing with other stuff. I use a hundson(hand pump) pressure sprayer to apply.

The used fryer fat is free and is based on the principle of earlier period paint. In my area they used red fish oil mixed with paint powder to make oil paint. We are talking 75-100+ years ago.

It darken the gray pine to almost black... looks great.

Linseed oil will work too.

I occasionally spray down a couple wood sheds at my place. No need to water the used oil down with kero. I spray straight used oil with a siphon sprayer run off my air compressor. Just fill a gallon jug with the oil, put your siphon hose in it, (put on your breathing mask), and start spraying.

This is the sprayer I use, (it will spray anything, good for degreasing equipment)...
