I have been running 5w 30 Rotella synthetic for the last 90 hours which has been the basically last winter and spring. I changed last night to Mobil1 synthetic 15w 50 as I worried that the summer heat was going to over tax a lighter oil. I have a jd 2210 and they recommend a 15w 40 ,but I could nt find any.

Am I being over indulgent?

That is getting a little thick, where are you located and what are your max outdoor temps like? Oil that is to thick can hold air bubbles (foam) easier than a thinner viscosity. The air is not released as quickly as it would be in a lighter weight oil. It will also increase the fuel consumption a little. The thicker the oil the more drag it induces which takes away a little HP.

Why couldn't you find 15w-40? It's the most common weight of diesel oil. I have to look hard to avoid it.

That's actually not that hot. I would stick with a 15W/40 viscosity oil in that temperature range. The only time I "might" go with something thicker would be extended operating times in a desert climate with constant temps in the 120+ deg range. As long as your cooling system is functioning as designed the engine should not be running any hotter than normal.

I went to Tractor supply and Walmart and they were cleaned out. Have to be honest though, the wife was out and I wanted to do it quickly that evening. I do plan to switch back to 5w30 in December.

Cleared out of 15W/40. Wow, that's rare since it is the most popular weight diesel engine oil there is.

If you have done oil and filter changes on the proper sched..you dont need a 50 weight oil at all.
