I was by the CC dealer today to pick up Hydrostatic oil and filter. I didn't carry the part number with me, thinking surely they would have it. I told the owner/parts guy/mechanic the model (2165) and he said "you need the synthetic". Well, he wrote it up ($31/gal) and off I go. I looked in the manual when I got home and the listed part number is different from what he sold me. The book calls for 737-3054 and he sold me 737-3121. Does anybody know the difference and is the oil I bought as good as or better than the specified oil?

The 737-3054 part number has been replaced by the 737-3121. Your dealer sold you the correct version of "liquid gold"......

"liquid gold"

Yeah, $50+ to change the synthetic BLEND oil and filter is kinda steep. Surely there is an equivalent or full synthetic for less than $8/qt.

Thanks for clearing me up on the part numbers. I appreciate it.

Yessir, the CC drive system fluid plus is pricey stuff, but unless it gets contaminated somehow, I'll never change all 6qts out (again) on my 2544. I'll add whatever I loose from a filter change, that's it. A filter and a qt of fluid every 100hrs is every 2yrs for me.

You might be on to something there, JYKub. I bought this used with 580 hrs on it and I don't know when it was changed last. The previous owner told me he changed the engine oil 3-4 times a year but I forgot to ask about the hydro oil until I was reading the manual. The filter doesn't look recent, although the oil is clear, so I thought I'd start from a known point.

I rarely buy new equipment and I like to go through my new purchases checking all adjustments and maintenance. It's just the way I am.

Anyone know about what a 2165/46" deck sold for in '98? Or what an equivalent one would sell for now?

Thanks for your comments and opinions.

The new price of a 2135 was approximately $ 3,000 (depending on options). Its modern day equivalent/replacement could be either the:

LT1046 belt drive........$ 1999

OR

GT2544 shaft drive..........$ 3599

Wow, the 2544 is now $3599! That's a hellava jump over last years $2999.

After looking though the manual a few more times for the hydrostat oil change interval, I've decided I'm going to do the same thing as Joel. Change the filter at the specified intervals and top up the fluid only.

It makes sense the fluid shouldn't have problems that engine oils have. The system is sealed and any dirt should be trapped by the filter. With no high temps or byproducts from combustion it's shouldn't deteriorate much over time. The topup oil from a filter change should be enough to keep it working just fine for a very long time...
