I have been looking at all kinds of tractors for the last couple of months. I was debating trading/selling my current tractor for a new bigger tractor or buying a new small 25 HP tractor to go along with my current tractor. I had posted a thread about this a while back. There were a couple of new tractors that I test drove that I really liked a lot and was impressed with but I really did not want to part with my tractor.

I had to think really hard about what I was trying to do and what my real needs would be concerning buying a another one. At first all I was looking at was new and mostly new 4WD tractors. Most of the ones I was interested in were in the price range of $17,000 to $34,000. In order to get one in the 17K to 20K I would have had to trade my tractor or sell it. In order to buy a brand new one I would have had to deal with payments for at least five years. Had I been 10 years younger I believe I would have done one of those two options without even thinking about it and would later regret it (done this before). Having said all that I stepped back and looked really hard about how much I really needed to spend on a tractor.

I decided to spend no more than $ 4,000 dollars on a tractor (No tractor payments or trading/selling my tractor). I looked at everything I could find in a 200 mile radius of my house to include riding back roads looking for tractors on farms. I wanted something at least close to 50 HP at the PTO that had some weight to it for pulling a blade, tilling the garden and brush cutting. I decided 2WD would be fine since I already have a 40HP 4WD. I finally found a 1968 John Deere 1520 that a retired farmer had for sale that I believed would fit my requirements. I drove two hours up to the mountains to check it out and it looked to be in good shape. I talked with him for about an hour, drove the tractor and worked out a deal for the tractor for 4,000 dollars. It was a very pleasant experience and this tractor weighs every bit of 5000 lbs., has independent 47 HP @ PTO, power-steering, and strong hydraulics. I have never really looked that much at these older tractors and was very impressed with how well built this tractor is. It has right at 3000 hrs on the hour meter and was built in America. I am pleased with this purchase and looking forward to years of use from a well built American made tractor. I also enjoyed the time spent with the retired farmer. He was full of knowledge and new about tractors from top to bottom. He had a shop that blew my mind. Definitely knows what he is doing. Better experience than I have ever had at a dealership.

For everyone on here looking for tractors take your time and look around at everything and all options. You might just surprise yourself. I know I have. I have been looking for another tractor for a couple of years now and when I started looking I never thought I would end up with what I just bought. I had it in my mind that brand new was the only way to go. This is my first purchase of a piece of equipment this size that I do not have to make payments on for years to come. It is a great feeling.

Very nice.

Interesting decal fading... only the front was exposed to sunlight. :scratchchin:

I am likely a LOT older than you.
I bought my newest tractor 4 years ago....a 1989 Ford 1920 FEL 4x4.
I have 2 other Fords.
A 1970 Ford 3400 TLB,(bought 1986) and a 1951 8N.(bought 1971).
All three have been completely refurbished...by me.
I have never even had a desire for a new tractor,.... you know ....the type with heated cup holders, A/C, and stereo sound system.
In my opinion.....you made a GREAT choice!

You did very well indeed!!!!! This tractor is extremely straight for it's age. Looks like it's been an "extra" tractor in his operation and only did light chore tasks. I didn't see a dent or deep scratch in any of the sheet metal. That's very rare over a 50 year span.

If the hours are accurate the powertrain is barely broken in. I've saw many of these old JDs with 10,000 hours on them and no major repairs.

If for some reason you decide this tractor doesn't fit your needs you can quickly get your money out of it. Great purchase!!!!! Keep us posted on your uses of this classic tractor!!!!

you did well. I wish i could find something like that to stick the mower on and just leave it as the mowing tractor

That type of work is my vision of this tractor's life. It certainly wasn't the every day beater chore tractor.

I have been out there today getting used to everything on the tractor. There are some items I need to take care of on it but nothing major. Things I have noticed so far are:

1. The valve core stem on one of the tires is shot. I went to put some air in one of the tires (at the 12 position) and the little spring thingamajig popped out and started leaking. The end of the valve stem was corroded pretty bad. This should not be to bad to fix. I put the spring back thingamajig back in and screwed the cap back on. Not leaking any more but can't put air in the tire until its fixed. I am guessing 10 to 15 psi is how much air will need to be in there?

2. The lower draft links are CAT II and the balls are worn slap out. I bought some bushings to bring it down to CAT I and they are loose going into the balls. Not sure what to do with this. Might just buy two new draft links. I did put some weight back there to see how it lifts. Picked the six foot tiller up like it wasn't back there.

3. The lights are not working. This really doesn't bother me that much. I don't plan on running it at night. I am going to get with my neighbor on this. He is good with lights on tractors and lawn mowers.

4. I want to find ROPS with a canopy to install on the tractor. I have found a few but they are pretty expensive. Might have to save up for this.

These are the only real issues I have noticed so far that are needing attention. I am ordering a service manual tonight and looking forward to having that to read. I am looking forward to learning as much as possible about this tractor.

As to the lower draft link balls. Aren't they easily replaceable?? A mechanism that allows the ball to be removed from the lower arms?? If so, the balls can be purchased at any good farm and home store. Don't buy new lower arms. You will be terrified at the price.

A canopy is nice if you are going to depend on this tractor to do your Summer mowing.

Maybe take a good picture of the lower arm ends and we'll brainstorm about the ability to replace the ball.

Here are some pics. I did not know there was a way to get those balls in and out.

Looks like you would have to cut the ends off, and weld a new set on. Not sure how often you will be changing rear implements, but Pat's Quick Hitch would be a quick and permanent fix. Granted, they're not cheap, but a have them on my Ford 4000 and wouldn't be without them.

I agree with JB. My tractor supply store stocks the weld on ends. That's the best fix.

I agree also. I priced some new draft arms and they are $390 a piece OEM and $290 a piece aftermarket. I am going to talk with a couple of welder friends and see if one of them will do it for me. Also considering the quick hitch system.

I got the valve stem fixed and put a little bit of air in their to get it right and it is holding good and not leaking. I am just glad it came out with no problem and the new one went right in.

I took it over my neighbors to ask about the wiring for the lights. He is going to help me with it. He was impressed with how well kept the tractor was especially the metal hood and front cover. He said it is rare to see them that old without dents and dings in them.

One more thing, the tractor has two rear remotes on it. It needs new hoses. I am going to get measurements and get them in good working order then I can get a hydraulic top link.

More rare than any of us can imagine. I think you have a jewel.

Obviously it's done 3pt chores to have worn the link ends that bad.

The operator valued this tractor and concentrated on not abusing it. That's a win for you!!! :)

I just looked at the lower link balls closer. I'd run it that way. Have you measured the inside diameter to see if they are worn out??

CAT II lower link pins are 1 1/8". 1.12" if using a caliper to measure them.

They are a little over 1 1/8". Not quite 1 3/16". When I put a bushing in there it was loose but I think I can use it until I get a permanent fix done. It will drive me nuts knowing they are a little loose.

I'm like that too. I'd use it that way until you've put enough hours on it to become confident in it's condition. Would hate to see you spend money on something like this and then realize you have to spend money on a necessity repair.

Anxious to hear your reports about the tractor. It's definitely a Queen!!!!
