If that's what the problem is. I would use/recommend studor vent brand AAV..I have use a number of these without any issues

That's what I linked to at Lowe's. And that's what I bought this morning and installed. Clever device.

Only thing that kinda ticked me off was that is said it works with 1.5" or 2". Great! I have 1.5". The thing is wrapped in plastic, and on the bottom you see 1.5" female threads. So I bought a 1.5" male end for my pipe. Get it home, open it, and the 1.5" female threads are on the bottom of a 1.5" to 2" adapter that the vent device is resting in, and the actual vent device has 1.5" male threads! Had to go back and get 1.5" female end for my pipe. Grrrr!!!!

The sink is cast iron. I can see water in the trap using a flashlight into the drain. Will see if I can get some Drano or equiv down the overflow. Haven't had time to pull the trap off yet.

Edit: Experimenting with running water into the drain for a few seconds and then stopping consistently issues a "burp" of bubbles up and out.

If your line is partially plugged somewhere downstream of the trap you could get positive pressure causing the burp. The in wall vent everyone is talking about would not resolve the problem because it allows air into the system not out.
The reason I wanted to know what kind of basin you had; is a cheap steel sink could hole through with a good drain cleaner. You will be OK with a cast iron one.

I poured some "hair and grease remover" into the overflow and let set overnight. This morning the sink drains much faster with no "burping". Didn't notice any smell but will see (smell actually) over the next few days whether it returns. MAYBE this fixed it, never dreamed of putting drain cleaner into the overflow.

Edit: I sure do appreciate you guys taking time to help me on this smelly issue.

Funny how hair and soap scum build up to the walls of PVC pipe, as if it were a magnetized...
U would think this sort of stuff would just slide right on down the PVC, but it won't..It will build up in the drain over time,, and smell almost like sewage

Hope that takes care of your problem. If not, you may have to take the trap apart and check the drain, and clean as necessary

Our home was built by a Vocational-Technical school class back in '74. I suspect that they forgot to vent the drain in one of the bathrooms as I get the sewer smell when draining the sink. The trap is in place so I'm guessing the only way it can vent is back up thru the sink drain. Anyone have suggestions as to how this might be remedied without tearing into the wall? (You may wonder why I haven't fixed this after 40 years:) Thank you in advance.

I'm late to the thread so ignore if it has been posted. Your plumber can supply a vent that goes under the sink. He put one on mine before I could tell him it was already vented in the wall.

It depends on how much value I put on my time...

How much would a certified plumber charge to:
- Try to snake out a pipe between a 90 year old septic system and a mystery location dry-well (seen once by the oldest guy on the block when a firetruck fell through it in the 60's).
- Discover the 90 year old clay pipe between the septic and drywell was crushed.
- Decide it would be cheaper to reroute the kitchen plumbing from the 90 year old septic system to the 40 year old septic system on the other side of the house.
- Run 30' of pipe through the basement without structurally damaging the house.
- Venting it properly.... and then running out to his truck to get the proper fitting?

..... still may have been worth it!

Ah the wonderful world of sewerage!

In all honesty, I kind of enjoy working on the plumbing.

Its stinky stuff for sure. I cut into a drain line to tie my kitchen into and a nice blob of grey goo plopped down 7' onto my shoes and went splat over to the wall. :p
