Last time I went to a Golden Corral Buffet was in Odessa, Tx about 10 years ago. Very nice restaurant from the outside and in a nice location. When I got inside, after I paid for the buffet, I knew I was in for a real time. EVERYONE, in that place looked like they weighed in at 300+lbs. It was early in the evening and they had steak that night so I went right to the steak. Man, that place was a mad house in no time. I ate and got out fast.

Nader wasn't offering any guarantees! I think his point was, the longer the food is sitting out, the more polluted it becomes. Probably at some temperature, it's a Petri dish for the human contamination from the buffet-wrestling crowd.

I think the better buffers are set up so that food is either on a steam table or chilled/ iced table. The Petri dish concept is magnified by people breathing - sneezing - coughing and using their hands.

I like the concept of having bench seating with little clearance to the dinner table at all you can eat Buffets. . Maybe like with baby chairs, they could have HUGE chairs (that cost EXTRA) for the Big people and shame them.
Industrial you made me think of a funny...
We know a couple 500#+ and a few years ago they were at a local seafood buffet.
They were at a table each with two chairs together...one for each cheek
The missus goes to the bathroom and everyone hears a crash. The commodes were wall-mounted!

Buffets like to have those tiny plates. I don't like to put much on mine and despite sometimes feeling a little awkward, doing more running back and forth than eating, I make MANY trips. But man, some people are highly skilled at loading up those little plates.

was working with a man and one day he told this.
He was installing a microwave dish on a tall building in downtown St. Louis year 1958. at lunchtime went to the local cubby hole cafe. as he walked in noticed the floor was cruddy then saw a waitress had been mopping behind the counter and just set aside the mop when they came in. When she asked for there order. He replied. Just wash your hands and hand me a can of soup and I will open it with my knife. paid for the soup and sat on the street curb. eating the soup. said the outdoor outhouse was more sanitary.

Don't you just love the dirty rag, they (historicallly) cleaned everything with?

But hey, most people have no notion of sanitation anyways. Yes most are trained (at least when someone is present) to wash their hands after they use the washroom, but FEW, seem to wash their hands as a matter of habit, before they eat when in a restaurant.

I hope no one interprets my post as fat shaming as it was not my intent. Human behaviour is what I was highlighting and certainly NOT physical characteristics.

Fat shaming? What a joke. When I Was fat, now referred to as morbidly obese, fat shaming was a sport! Friends, brothers, parents, teachers, doctors, cops, ministers, everybody. You were not big you were a FAT F***!

Are we not supposed to be ashamed of anything anymore? Is everything ok, just because you are special?

I知 not going to go on and on.

More PC BS!

When I go to a buffet, it's a 3 plate limit,
Salads
main course
fruit/dessert
and that's it.

I have seen people park themselves for hours.

I am not particularly PC. However I like to think I have respect for people.

IF I knew you years ago I would have most likely referred to you as a fat f*ck (if i thought you were) .......or simply a friend.

My great uncle (rip) years ago worked in a restaurant kitchen. He said one grubby guy working there used to wash his socks in the dishwasher. Everyone called him "Filthy McNasty".

That's funny. There is a sports bar in Oakville Ontario called that! Typical place owned by and run by kids. The name probably fits the cleanliness of the kitchen.

I ate at a chicken place in Niagara Falls some years ago. It was a famous family run destination known by many. They moved and I tried their new location. All kids working there. Two were just about having *** with each other. Got an order of wings with feathers in it. (First time in my life that has happened). Complained to the manger (another kid) who didn't see what the fuss was about. We just walked out. Put me off eating wings for some time. Thanks Honeys!

The waitress walks around with a flyswatter, kills one on the table next to you, then wipes it off with the same rag she's going to wash your table with after you leave.
Or she brings your meal then picks up a broom and starts sweeping, figuring the dust will add a little flavor to your meal.

I routinely will go to the rest room and wash my hands before dining, unless I came straight from my house. I also prefer to wash them anytime I'm going into a convenience store, but not everyplace has a sink available. With the new "Sanitary practices" in place now, very few places even have a rest room you can use for that, although they do have the sanitizer which may or may not be empty.

Local Asian buffet had banners for a Friday night special of Alaska King Crab legs when we stopped in there one Friday. No crab legs out on the buffet for the 45 minutes or so we were there. One of the tables closest to the (empty) crab leg station was a solitary woman that drooped over either side of her chair. Beside her were maybe 5 heaping plates of crab leg remains. Apparently, she was a regular, got there early for short waddles to the buffet, and "ran the table". Staff didn't bother to clear her carnage, maybe hoping she would leave in embarrassment. Nope.

We used to eat at a Chinese buffet that was always busy. One day it was about 70 degrees and we were seated near an open door leading outside. (Now, everyone who has or knows about cats knows this...). The white painted woodwork around the door had a dark area starting up about 6" from floor, then about 6" wide. I asked wife what did that look like? Where cats always rub their face!
We are vegetarian that day.
Behind that door is a sub division. At home I called animal control. "Do you have reports of lots of missing cats from that sub division?"..."Why, yes we do! Why do you ask???". I said just curious and hung up.
Then I called the health department. Lady said "I'll check it out and call you in a few days". I never heard back! So I called her. She stammered " uh...everything was ok...not to worry".
We drove by the restaurant...it was closed.
No explanation...just a busy buffet restaurant closed permanently.

We had several Asian buffets when we lived in Florida. We saw the same thing that jmc describes. Asian buffet and King Crab legs - a couple that weighed about 500# each had piles of remains on many plates. The bin for the crab legs stayed empty for a long time. We rarely got any. A little consideration of others would have been appropriate.

Also saw a little kid take a few noodles from a bowl and drop one on the floor. He reached down and put it back in the bowl. Parents weren't watching him. This could be anywhere though.

And with Fuddy's post, there was an article in the local newspaper about an Asian restaurant being shut down because they were using cats.

Many years ago I was doing alarm work in a chinese food restaurant kitchen. Little kid was messing with the cooked food. No one cared. I generally only eat at the big chains, where they are not running a nursery in the kitchen.

Even longer ago than that, I used to hitchhike to work. Got a ride once with one of those linen service company, employees. He said Chinese Restaurants were always the worst of what he had seen.

Way back in High School we went to a Ground Round (was a local chain) for the all you can eat fried chicken. Most of us could put away a basket or two as they were half fries and 1/4 chicken. Our football buddy "big phil" put away 26 baskets, and drank 3 pitchers of beer in that one sitting. It was surreal.
They also served little baskets of peanuts (floor was always covered in shells) and had projectors, usually showing old short movies or cartoons at Ground round. New owners and changing tastes and a takeover by owners who wanted to make the chain less costly to run and make it seem like every other chain eventually killed the whole aesthetic.

We had a ground round, don’t remember peanuts.

Hard to find good Chinese food. Most are dives. I drive by the house of the owners of a Chinese restaurant, their place is a mess, won’t eat at their restaurant.
