Odd restaurant policies?!?

I've had nothing to do with the restaurant business, and know practically nothing about it, but over the years I've told a number of people that the restaurant business would be the last business I'd want to be involved in. NO ONE cooks well enough to satisfy EVERYONE. So you're bound to have some unhappy customers. And I would think it would always be a bit uncertain; never really know how much business you're going to have, how much food to buy or have ready. I'm glad that there are good restaurants; just glad I'll only be a customer, never an owner.

I owned a transmission shop in the eightys. If you think restaurants are bad, tell a customer who痴 car was running perfectly yesterday that he is going to spend $$$$$ to have his car running like last week tomorrow. NOBODY loves a transmission shop.

There was a really quality restaurant like that maybe 20 miles from here, so we took Bill and his wife (she's tiny so they made a profit on her). Buffet on Sunday lunch only. We hit the jackpot that day. They bring out this large halibut on a platter. We got some, then Bill says "I'm gonna close it out!" and he did.
That Homer Simpson video reminded me of that! I had about 3 full plates of a variety of things. Then on to the desserts...I had 4 servings and I was ready to pop! We were there over 2 hours watching Bill plow through everything. Then they bring out this large bowl of blueberries and another of whipped cream. I got a dish, Bill says watch this, bringing the bowls to table. People were staring in amazement!
We tried to weigh him at home but he would peg a scale since they only go to 350...so we used two adding them up!
Amazingly he's 62 and in pretty good health.

I was in the repair business over 40 years. The greatest thing is to be self employed...but the stress can be terrific at times. Most people are ok.
Dad(rip) was service manager at Sears after WWII. I wished he had written a book, although I remember his amazing stories!

The first transmission shop I went to tried to sell me a new transmission when I went in for routine service. I drove that truck another 100K miles without spending another dime on it... including another fluid change. He then went on to become a Montana tractor dealer, which morphed into LS; he's the reason I wouldn't consider that brand until they have a better dealer.

Oh yeah, he also took a friend for a couple of grand for warranty work on his Montana...

Yeah, I bailed out of the business after a couple of years. I could not compete with the dishonest shops. I would not screw a customer.

The thing was, if it did had the problem he'd claimed he would have just replaced the overdrive and charged me for a full transmission job.

I do not know if this is ODD or not but it is a first for me.

Last night the couple who recently purchased my business invited me out for dinner to meet their management team. This is the first time I had set foot in a restaurant since Covid.

I was surprised to discover there were no (physical) menus available and you had to use your smart phone to scan the QR Code

Not certain what someone without a smart phone would do, besides perhaps lose weight?

Most restaraunts around her hand out one laminated menu, and then point to the QR code and say the if we didn't want to share, we could scan and pull up the menu on the phone.

Way back in High School we went to a Ground Round (was a local chain) for the all you can eat fried chicken. Most of us could put away a basket or two as they were half fries and 1/4 chicken. Our football buddy "big phil" put away 26 baskets, and drank 3 pitchers of beer in that one sitting. It was surreal.
They also served little baskets of peanuts (floor was always covered in shells) and had projectors, usually showing old short movies or cartoons at Ground round. New owners and changing tastes and a takeover by owners who wanted to make the chain less costly to run and make it seem like every other chain eventually killed the whole aesthetic.

Amen to that! Pigs would have better manners than some people at the all you can eat buffets.

Decades ago, consumer advocate Ralph Nader said something to the effect of- if you must eat at a buffet, try to get there early.

I think buffet is the french word for “feed trough” when you want to swine and dine.

Not my thing, but I have no problems with the all you can eat concept.

What really bothers me is the way customers load up their plates for the mere sake of loading it up, leaving a large portion or more of it and getting up to do it again.

The wastefulness is a disgrace.

You took the words right out of my mouth...indeed a shame. :(

We used to (swine & dine ) at local Golden Corral, arriving about 10:30 am. That way we got the breakfast buffet AND lunch buffet they started putting out about 11. I bet lots of customers we saw have passed. Huge and I mean huge people. One guy I remember getting steaks (what quality meat could it be for $8.95 at an ace?) Ace=all can eat. This guy as they put steaks on grill would holler out "RARE!"...so basically raw.
There used to be a Duff's buffet not too far. They had this huge motorized round table, half in kitchen, other half in dining area with partitions. You'd stand there getting whatever came around the carousel putting on your plate...only people were eating as stuff came around. We look around and some lady had her mouth over the ice cream machine nozzle, pulling on the lever!

Last time I went to a Golden Corral Buffet was in Odessa, Tx about 10 years ago. Very nice restaurant from the outside and in a nice location. When I got inside, after I paid for the buffet, I knew I was in for a real time. EVERYONE, in that place looked like they weighed in at 300+lbs. It was early in the evening and they had steak that night so I went right to the steak. Man, that place was a mad house in no time. I ate and got out fast.

I like the concept of having bench seating with little clearance to the dinner table at all you can eat Buffets. . Maybe like with baby chairs, they could have HUGE chairs (that cost EXTRA) for the Big people and shame them.
