My wife and I want to go to the outer banks of NC sometime in the fall and take our dog.. We want to rent a house near the beach

I would like to find a beach/community that allows dogs to be off-leash part of the time (early morning or late afternoon) or anytime..

Any suggestions for beaches or areas? any suggestions for pet friendly rental homes?

thanks

Brian

Brian,
As for places to stay - OBX area has more pet-friendly rentals by far than any beach area on the NC Coast. The rental companies we have used are Southern Shores Realty, Coldwell Banker, Elan Vacations, and Corolla Light Realty. Corolla is our favorite area, particularly a home we stayed at in the Currituck Club - it's just a good ride getting there. As for getting your dogs in the water - be careful of the sound as locals note it can be very snake-filled! Check out the link below to see leash laws for the various areas - Have a fun & safe trip!

Well, let me warn you...We took our two dogs (Brittney & Lab) there in 06'. They had never been in the car for more than a 1/2 hour so the ride down was horrible. It was very difficult getting them hooked up to the leash at the rest stops without them getting loose. Once we got there I took the Lab and he drug me across the cement (resulting me getting cut up within the first 2 minutes of arriving at our vacation spot)...Then, they ran into the house and marked it everywhere. We ended up having to pay in the end to have the carpets cleaned. We did take the dogs on the beach (on leash, they would be gone otherwise). The thing that was awful was that we could not go anywhere the whole time (restaurants, shopping, sights...etc) because we had to stay and watch the dogs. Walking the dogs was a pain because they would get the burrs in their paws. The Brittney got one stuck in his foot and he would not let us get it out. Also, one night my dad went out to walk them and he fell in the drainage ditch along the road and hurt his leg resulting in him having stay on the couch for the rest of the trip.

Just a warning...

Our dog is very good on the leash and in new places, and 5 or 6 hr car trips are nothing new to him.. My biggest concern is keeping him OUT of the surf - he loves water, which normally means he also needs a bath afterward.. LOL

Not legal, but we had our dogs leashless on the beach at Corolla. But they are Labs and we had a training dummy for them to retrieve from the ocean. When it comes out, they don't pay much attention to anything else. Folks would come up wanting to pet them, etc., but they would'nt give them a second glance as long as the dummy is in view. Fortunately for us, every place we stayed had an outside faucet and garden hose - they got a bath everyday. They hate the bath and love drying off playing the "towel game".

There are several beaches that are not mentioned on the attachment. Our favorite OBX beach is Carova (if you have a true 4x4). there are no roads so all driving is on the sand. Carova is at the end of NC-12 past Duck and Corolla. The beach is way less crowded except for the first couple miles which are used by people that drove out for the day. The typical house we get is 7+ miles down the beach and we usually dont have anyone within a 100 yards of us. Dogs without a leash are all I have ever seen there and Corolla. Twiddy has most of the rentals from what we have seen.
