Tractor
Ford 1900
Hello, I have a ford 1900 tractor 4x4. There will be lots of questions, But not all at once, The major problem is cleaning etc, I have a few leaks in the loader controls, are they hard or easy to repair? Yes, that is a dumb question, we own british cars I can rebuild SU carbs, heads, do tune ups, adjust valves, and all the MG type problems. The major questions, are the o-ring metric or standard, is there a kit I would need to order, Yes we have an owners manual, shop manual and a parts catalog. But a little help increases my confidence and save me money. Thanks Mike

Given your stated experience, spool valves should not be all that difficult for you to rebuild. Now, having said that, I will tell you that the success rate may not be that good. You're looking at a valve that's over 30 years old. There could be pitting, and will likely be wear. So, a rebuild will be somewhat of a gamble. Typically, I will try a rebuild first, before I replace. The rebuild kits are usually much less expensive than a new valve.
Your NH dealer will have the rebuild kits. (assuming it's a Ford loader) There are probably aftermarket kits too, but I'm not sure.

The truth is that there is not much one can do to to rebuild a spool valve.

The spools are a precision fit and if they wear, they leak and there isn't much you can do.

The O-rings on the spools are not there to keep pressure/fluid in, they are there to keep dirt and crud out of the spool.

You can try the o-rings if the spool has them, and see if they help reduce the leakage.

Some people try and use any o-ring that looks similar, but I would recommend you get the factory parts if possible. With worn or no o-rings, a good hyd tech can generate the correct size o-ring by carefully measuring the bore, and indentations on the spool.

O-rings come in different material. Buna N O-Ring, Viton® O-Ring, Bonded Seal (Viton).

The manufacturers have a leak down rate to say a valve needs replacing. It might be 10 drops per min or whatever.

You can get a new loader valve for about $250
