DO NOT USE GREASE ON BATTERY TERMINAL CONNECTORS! Grease will at some point hold any moisture that accumulates and then cause corrosion to develop! There are anticorrosion sprays available if you wish to use them. Personally, I like them bare of coverings and paint, that way I can do a visual inspection to see if it needs to be cleaned. A good practice is to inspect and clean (if needed) your battery cables (both ends) when you do any service to your tractor—oil change, grease it, whatever.
If inspecting becomes a habit you can avoid that headache many times.

Agreed on this statement, and as Ziggywiggy stated, wire brush them clean as a starting point.

One method wire brushing until shines follow by light coating grease.
12.5 yr. old battery that I've owned it. Sat for over a week since it's been cranked. Went out day before yesterday to cut grass. Mid 30's the night before 12.55 and cranked right up. Stays outside and attached to the Tractor. Been using a light coat of grease for decades on battery Terminals. I do it on my Ranger Bass boat Batteries. 3Marine Deep dwell 2 I jump over to run a 24V. Trolling motor the other for 2live wells and a 850cca. Eng..... It's starts adding up $$. Never have any problems doing it.
