Re: * Nostalgia ~ Your first car ! *

When I was a teenager, my parents had a 48 Oldsmobile hydramatic, traded for a '52 Chevrolet powerglide in '57 and didn't like it, so I got it, and they got a '53 Buick dynaflow.

Dad had a 41 stick shift Chevy he traded for a 50 Chevy stick shift.
The 50 chevy must have been 2 or 3 years old when he got it.
It was a nice car but he got the new car itch when the 1955 chevys came out so he traded it in on a new 55 Base model 150. It was a 6 Cylinder standard. The only thing he got extra on it was the white top the rest or the car was green. It didn't even have a radio. This was a very good trouble free car and probably one of the best cars he ever owned. It was the only new car he ever owned,
I bought it from him in the early 60s and sold it to my younger. brother a couple of years later.

But it would be nice to own it now wouldn't it ?

Re: * Nostalgia ~ Your first car ! *

First car was a '64 MGB purchased new when I was 22. A real piece of crap mechanically but a blast to drive. During the next two years almost everything broke - most parts were replaced under warranty. It did not work more than it worked, but had a great time when it did. Got into about 4 accidents, one on each side, one in the front and one in the back so that every body panel was replaced during that two years. Took it on my honeymoon in '66 and couldn't get it to run most of the time so we staid in the motel which was ok. Traded it in on a plymouth valiant at the end of my honeymoon. Traded the wife in a few years later. Haven't missed either one.

MODEL YEAR - 1971
MAKE - Ford
YEAR YOU GOT IT - 1971
DESCRIPTION - Pinto, 4 cyl, auto. Plastic seats, AM radio, no AC.
OPTIONAL How old were you at the time ? - 16
ADVENTURES * Memories / fun times - with it. C'mon, it was a Pinto. How much fun could anyone have in one of those things? About a year after I got it, I replaced the factory wheels with mags and some sharp white-lettered tires. Stopped by the school one afternoon to watch the cheerleaders practice. After a short while, it was time for me to leave, so I put 'er in reverse and floored it. Unbeknownst to me was the fact that after I parked, someone had parked about 2 car lengths behind me. The sound of crunching metal as the right side of my rear bumper hit the driver's side of her front end made me realize that maybe I should have looked in my mirror first. My coolness level dropped precipitously as this caught the attention of all cheerleaders and bystanders.

The car I struck was a 72 Nova less than a week old. It was a mom driving her oldest daughter's new car to pick up the younger daughter from cheerleading practice. She was upset with me, to say the least. Close inspection of the Nova revealed only a minor dent in some chrome trim on the front end. Inital inspection of the Pinto showed only a little scuff mark on the rubber pad on the bumper. Whew, I really dodged a bullet. Or so I thought. As I walked around to the passenger side of the Pinto, I noticed that the right rear quarter panel looked like an accordian. Long story short. Cost me $16 to fix the Nova. $250 for the Pinto. Couple of months to restore my image with the cheer babes.

HomeBrew2,

Thank you my friend!! That brought back many memories too, just seeing it. The one I had was red, just like in that pic. As I remember, they only came in three colors, red, aqua green and black!! That little momma could hum right along, as that comedy song says!! I think mine cost me $100.00 to buy. I didn't care if it was "cool" or not!! It got me there and back everytime and when others didn't have gas money, I still had gas!!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

This was the vehicle I had that went "beep beep". Not my first, but will always be my favorite. This isn't mine, but the color scheme is correct.

ADVENTURES

How I got it was a bit of an adventure..........
I was working about 100 hours a week at the neighborhood Standard Oil station, pumping gas and doing lube and oil jobs when they let me - the perfect job for an aspiring gearhead. It was fairly late in the evening (we closed at 11 pm!) and a fellow came limping in with this dirty, nasty looking, noisy old Pontiac. He said his wife had run off with the kids to Omaha, from their home in Oklahoma, and he'd gone and gotten her back, but that he didn't think the Pontiac would make it back to OK, and if someone would give him $10, they could have it. I handed him a $10 bill before anyone else could speak, and he handed me the title and the keys - and I was an owner! I drove it home that night and my dad hit the roof, he didn't think any 16 year old should have his own car, so he took the keys. A little later after they had gone to bed I snuck
out the back door with the extra set of keys I still had in my pocket, and since it didn't have any mufflers to speak of, I pushed it out of the driveway and rolled down the hill. I drove down to my girlfriends house and hung out with her for a while and then decided to cruise around a bit before driving home. By now it was about 1 am, and most of the stop lights were flashing, and there was very little traffic - which turned out to be my savior. I was heading down a backstreet - a long but gentle downhill, doing about 30 mph. The street "T"d at the intersection of a very busy road, and of course the light was red for me. I eased on the brakes - nothing! I tried the "e" brake - nothing! I tried pulling it down into low gear, and it felt like it went into neutral and sped up! By now my heart is really thumping and I'm getting really close to the intersection when all of a sudden the transmission hits low gear and about throws me thru the windshield, I make it around the corner - barely, running the red light, but there are no cars coming, so I'm OK. I drove home the remaining three blocks and crept into the driveway, but since it was uphill I had to run the motor all the way there - I couldn't coast in like I did when I left. Of course my dad was there watiting for me, and without a word he took the extra set of keys too.
It was about three months before I got them back - you think it isn't hard for a 16 year old to see his car sitting in the drive and not be able to even start it? When I finally got the keys back, I took it to work at the gas station and put on some mufflers, topped up the brake and trans fluid, put on a couple of new tires and cleaned it up and I had a nice car all thru highschool. It was loaded - even had A/C that worked!
Total investment - about $150................sold it for that same amount to a neighbor who's wife promptly totaled it. Nobody got hurt, but the car was gone.............. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Re: * Nostalgia ~ Your first car ! *

Hmmm, First car was 67 corvette coupe , I was 19 years old and found it in the newspaper for $2850.00 of course this was 1978 or 79, It had a 327-300 4spd and 3.70 posi rear it was quick...and yes I paid for it myself, there is a picture in my gallery ....

Now that was my first car, My first vehicle was a 14,000 mile datsun pick-up truck, It was almost like new, great little( I mean little)truck , great mileage fun to drive, I used to drive it like I stole it /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif But it kept on running great had it for awhile after I got the vette, The truck seemed to lose in the desire to drive anymore area after the vette came along... Hindsight should have kept both of them at least a little longer...

Re: * Nostalgia ~ Your first car ! *

First car I got in 1967, it was a 1962 Mercury Meteor 4 door, 221 V8 with three on the tree. What I remember most about it was the unreliable gas gauge, being only 16 years old I never had much money for gas and I ran out countless times because I didn't have the means to keep it fueled up.

After about a year of that, I decided to remove the fuel tank and replace the sending unit. Tanks still had drain plugs back then, and I drove the car until I figured it was low on gas, and got my two gallon can and removed the drain plug. Of course the plug fell into the open can, but I thought no big deal, there won't be that much to drain. WRONG !! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

It would have been interesting to have a video of me keeping a thumb on the tank drain, while trying to transfer the full fuel can into another empty one to get the drain plug out, without spilling any of my precious gasoline in the process. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Good thing I had the car parked on a dirt surface and not pavement, because all the shifting around of the metal cans could have created a spark. NEVER AGAIN did I try to drain the gas tank.
