the way I have used the water level is to set it up fasten one end to a post, and take the other end and compare the water level, and take a marker and mark the level on the clear tube, and make sure you have enough extra to keep water from spilling, on both ends,
after marking the points, I take the loose end and carry it with out spilling and raise or lower the hose to the water to the mark, that is level from the point you marked on the post and the other end, as long as you do not spill any water it will work the length of the hose,
