Noisy Alternator/Dynamo

My F22 seems to have a noisy Alternator, if you hold on to the steel bracket that holds the adjustment nut it kinda quiets down. Seems like its vibrating, like a bad bearing? It is charging correctly but I am kinda worried about the noise. Do the bearings fail on these often? Should I be worried or just run it until it stops charging and then have it rebuilt localy?

If it is the bearing or what ever. I would have it checked. It could mess up the case, shaft, or some other part/ parts that could keep it from being rebuild.Having it checked now may save you from having to buy a new 1 later

Failure is failure, regardless of how often. I would have it rebuilt soon before it seizes.

Take the belt off and then turn by hand. Listen for any noise and see if there is any slack. Do this for the idler pulley too if there is one.

Thanks everyone, I will remove te dynamo and check for slack/noise when spun by hand. I live in Oregon, does anyone know what major shop would rebuild these units? I do have a napa near by.

Could it be just a loose bolt? Check those before you replace.

My thoughts exactly, Bobrip. If it quiets down when you grab it, it's probably not a bearing but something loose.........

Where do you live? There is an auto electric place not far from me and I've had them rebuild an alt for a not so popular import. Did a decent job for a lot less than a rebuilt at auto supply store.

Might also check with Ernie at Ernies Imports (he posts here on the forum) as he is in Oregon. Might be able to point you to a shop, give advise or even possibly have an alt for sale. Ernie handles quite a few F series tractors.
