no reverse

Hello to all, My son has 2003 Honda Rancher with electric shift. It will not go in reverse. I checked the switch on the handle bars and saw no problems. The selector switch for reverse will down shift the transmission. Someone tell me what and how to check for something else. Thanks in advance. Rick /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I have the same model Rancher. Is this something that just started happening?
Is this the way he is doing it? Depress the red button. Hold it down while pulling the lever all the way back. Depress the down shift button while holding the lever back. Should go from neutral to reverse.

I have a 2000 Rancher ES. I lost reverse once while in a swamp putting up a fence. A stick pulled a wire loose. Check on the bottom of the engine behind the skid plate. Mine just popped the connection loose. Just plug it back in.

Hope it is that simple for you and not something more serious.

If this is not it does it shift at all? Sometimes mine will also get mud and grit behind the shift buttons but I just rinse it out.

Same thing happen to mine!! Annoying but easy fix.
