Miss the NHL a lot, wife and I are both fans. Always had season tickets when we lived near a team-- moved back to the Washington DC area in 2001 but couldn't stand to become a Caps fan again. Too much heartache in the 90's with those guys. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Still a Dallas Stars fan-- kept my season tickets there even when we lived in England for 3 years, got back for a 10 or 15 games in the regular season and the Stanley Cup finals in 1999 and 2000. Tough to watch the Devils skate the cup in our building- btw, I liked Reunion a lot better than the new center, lot better atmosphere.

In 2001, through a business connection, I was able to attend a Hall of Fame reception in Toronto and was given a tour of the NHL musem including the back rooms where the stuff that wasn't on display was kept. We came across a pile of goalie sticks in a room and was told to "reach in and pull one out", pulled what turned out to be the stick that Ron Hextall used to score a goal! A lot of fun.

Oh well, they'll be back some time and in the meantime, I saved the price of the NHL Center Ice package for this season.

Ron,

I hear you on this one. Hockey Night in Canada was a big draw for me. I love the coverage and the commentators and Coach's Corner (you either love Don Cherry or you hate him - not much in between).

As far as all the rest of the comments about the $$ the whiners are making I can't agree more. We had a local boy here in Edmonton who made it to the NHL by the name of Mike Comrie. He was all over the news telling everyone how his only dream was to play for the Oilers. The Oilers drafted him and he became a bonified Oiler. He was a crowd favorite and all of Edmonton loved him. He had a good year and was going to be a real asset to the team. Then he got greedy. Wanted more money. Being a small market team the Oilers couldn't pay it. He left. Now he gets booed everytime he touches the ice in Edmonton. Sour grapes by the fans? Maybe....but how much money does a guy need to play a game?

Missing it? Nope.
Was a big Re Wings fan. Went to games, autographed jerseys, pictures, the whole bit. Seen the strike coming so we unloaded all of our Red Wings stuff. Now the NHL can get stuffed. We'll never go to another game and don't care to watch it either. The players (and their union) don't care, why should I?

I played football all through Jr. High and High School and I really loved it. But It wouldn't upset me too much if all team ball sports fizzled out tomorrow. I don't understand how people get so involved with any of it, or why the life consuming preocupation so many people have with it.

Not to bring up an old thread but Hockey is canceled for the year. I personally could care less. It is very frustrating that these people making as much money as they are could care less about the workers-concession stands-parking-tickets-and all else that goes into a hockey game. If they only knew how many people they sent home without jobs because of their "me attitude". And don't get me wrong it is both players and owners.

Ok I vented, don't know why as I didn't much watch hockey.

Ken I'll second that!

Besides it now takes real $$$$$ to take your family to any of the games anyhow.

Why did it have to be hockey?

It should have been basketball!!!!!
(I hate basketball)

I was listening to a talk show this afternoon talking about the survival of professional sports, particularly hockey. Out here in California we hardly even know what hockey is much less the rules and how it's played. Professional sports in general is perhaps finally getting the reality check it needs. Lots of hype and less easily hyped people. I think basketball may be next, football and whats that other sport where everyone stands around while the other team sits? Hockey just never really caught on out West. I gather it's the dominant professional sport in Canada. Perhaps we will settle for college hockey and then maybe some Olympic hockey, but that's OK by me.

Now....we have to watch basketball to see a brawl. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I've not been able to afford the price of tickets or had the inclination to attend a game for years. Watch parts of games on TV though. Probably have to pay though due to additional cost of products the advertizing cost will add.

There is talk about the loss of collateral income in a community. I have questions on wether there is a real loss or not. My thinking is there is a finite amount of disposable income available. This income will be channeled into other areas so there is no real loss in a community.

Egon - I agree with you in principle that there will be little overall economic impact. If someone has a $100 that he does not spend on a game, he will spend it somewhere else. Just transferred from one pocket to another. At the same time, there are a lot of people, probably mostly low income, that are employed in game related work that will be affected.

I care - because I'm tired of hearing about "Oh the season is going to be canceled." I'm glad they finally did cancel it, now we won't have to keep hearing about whether they are or aren't going to cancel it. Now if they can get the strike/lock-out (whichever it is) settled so they can go back and be the obscure sport that nobody cares about again. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I don't care either. Between working full time, home repairs and improvements and working/playing with my tractors...well for me I would rather do these things than watch the tube. Have a heated workshop for winter too /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Last time I cared about hockey was back in the days before Peter Puck "sold" the great Gretz. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif I had a couple of people up from Michigan and decided to treat them to a pro hockey game. This was a non-expense account deal .... paid for 3 gold tickets out of my pocket. Oilers vs. Flames .... and absolutely the worst, most boring game I'd ever seen. None of the players seemed very interested in playing .... passes were desultory, shots on goal were nerf shots ... basically, I'd never seen a peewee, junior or minor league game that bad ... heck, I don't recall too many pick=up games that boring.
Last time the NHL got any of my money.
In fact, I've stuck with the big dish satellite tv system just because it's ala carte ... I pick what I want to pay for .... and no sports channels are included. I refuse to contribute to multi-million dollar contracts for guys who can dunk a ball, or slap a puck, or what a horsehide, or catch a pigskin, or hit a golfball, tennis ball, or volleyball ... oh wait, I might make an exception for womens beach volleyball, /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
