oh great tractor gurus, i come seeking your knowledge...

i borrowed my neighbors Ford 540a over the weekend to do a little levelling. turns out i leveled his muffler with my clothesline. /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif

that was bad enough, but when i returned the tractor i had a brain burp and left it sitting out under the oak tree where it always sits without covering the exhaust pipe./w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif

we ended up with about two inches of rain over the last two days and i'm sure that some of it has ended up in the combustion chambers.

i have heard before that you can do some major damage trying to start an engine with water in the combustion chambers since water doesn't compress very well. does anyone have any experience with this situation and what is the best resolution.

i plan on changing the oil since i'm sure some of the water has seaped past the rings. what else should i do prior to starting it again? remove the injectors and crank it to expel the water? any thoughts or suggestions will be appreciated.

best regards,

Charlie, you can remove the injectors, then turn it over for a bit. That should expell most of the water, if any. Also, you can try blowing it out with a compressor. The oil change is a good idea. Probably wouldn't hurt to put some oil in the cylinders and cycle them to make sure the rings don't stick. Whatever you do, don't wait too long, doesn't take lonf for rust to appear.

Keep the greasy side down.

And you are absolutely right about not trying to start it. In our 4X4 off-road days, we went through a deep water hole. Son-in-law was behind us in a Nissan pickup and came into the hole a little too fast. Sucked water into the engine and killed it. Before we could get stopped and get back to him, he tried to start it up. Turned a couple of rods into horseshoes. Spent the next weekend putting a new motor in it. While I don't know much about diesel engines, I'd anticipate that the higher compression ratios would make it even worse. Just remember, air compresses -- fluid doesn't!

thanks for the info mike,

just talked to the owner and found out the 540a has a decompression lever /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif so we shouldn't have to remove the injectors.
