Recently while mowing my steering started jerking as if I was low on fluid.
I stopped the machine, checked oil (ok) but then after restarting had no hydraulics except for brakes (1982 2040). Since then I have drained old hyd oil, replaced the hyd filter and sump screen but to no avail. Still no hydrtaulics. Main pump shaft is turning and there are no unusual noises and no hot spots to indicate an internal leak. Ideas?

If you can see into the oil sump, is there any oil motion? No motion may indicate a broken pump shaft or a pressure limiting by-pass stuck open.

If by sump you mean the area into which you pour the new oil--I observed at various RPMs and did not see ay oil at all, although the dipstick registers full.

The oil sump = oil tank if you wish, both names are used. Is this the first time you looked into the tank and was it ever full? Where is the dip stick located? White hydro oil = water contamination. You could flush and refill with the correct AW 32/46 grade for your location.

Install a hyd gage in the system, and see if there is any pressure. The pump may be turning, but if it can not pick up any fluid, it can not pump any. Try loosen a fitting after the pump, ans see if any fluid comes out. Do not get close to fitting, and put a rag around it.

Git er done, if-fen you want to.. and boy do I want to. I have a lot of bush hogging to do.
Never considered loosening a fitting after the pump. I will "carefully" do just that". Thanks

Transit,
This is indeed the first time I seriously looked inside so do not know if there was ever oil showing--just not now. There are one or two "gears" showing and they are not being lubed as far as I can see. Dipstick is located on right side behind driver's foot. Not a screw type, just a push in and pull out with an O ring. Very hard to read when oil is clean as it now is.

Gears??? I do not know of any hydro oil tanks that have gears unless they are the type that share the transmission oil with the hydraulic oil and that would use a way, way different oil than a AW type oil. Can you trace the pump input line back to its origin?
